Mailday--First dip into vintage unopened packs

So I was excited to see this in the mailbox at work today. I am no expert on vintage packs, but I figured with PSA giving it a grade it should be credible and authentic. No I am not planning on opening it. It will probably stay the way it isimage As I said, I don't know much about vintage packs or their flips. From those who know more than me, does this look to be on the up and up--both the pack and the flip? If so, I am pretty fired up to have it. Thanks.

The pack is legit. Was sold originally by Probstein a couple months back. Congrats on the pickup!

  • That is an awesome pickup.

Thanks for the confirmation on authenticity and history. I am excited about the pack. Like I said I have never bought anything unopened that was older than 1981 so I am excited to have it. Don't know much about the market. I picked it up for about $550. From the limited information I could find online that seemed in line with what packs graded this condition had gone for historically. Is that a pretty good price for this type of item? Thanks again.

VCP has only 2 PSA 7 59 cellos sold, including this one, for an average of about $375.

Well looks likes I am on the wrong side of that average. LOL. Oh well. Still happy to have it. Haven't seen an item like this very often.

  • Congrats on the pickup. We sure are a tightly trade bunch.

I bought this pack in a GIA holder about a year ago and crossed it over to PSA. Was sad to see it go but I moved focus onto wax over cellos. So rest assured it is legit. I am happy you are the new owner and excited to have it.

    +1

That is a pretty small sample size though. The pack will probably be in my collection for a while. If I do sell it, I think it will sell for more than $375. That's the great thing about unopened, they're not making more of it. (Please no obvious jokes here)

Somebody please tell me where to go to buy a 1959 cello pack for $375! I would even buy two!

This same pack actually sold for $334 via Probstein auction no less a couple months back.

I would agree that that price is lower than expected but you can still find deals if you're patient (or lucky) enough.

That's a great looking pack congrats on the pick up! And I'm always learning something from Tim too, I didn't know VCP had pack prices I always though it was just for cards.

Nice pack! Take a look at the back of the pack. That is what you need to look for in '57, '58 and '59 cellos to tell if they are legit. Folds are from the short ends, with serrated lines running down the pack short end to short end. Also the cello should be thin, not thick. The price depends a lot on the series. This is a series 4 pack which is one of the most common series found for '59 cellos, along with 3 and 4. The best cards in this series are Ernie Banks and Al Kaline. I don't think I have ever seen a series 1, 2, 6 or 7 cello. Hope you can resist busting it!!

    Nice pack.

I'd also say that's "Mabe" the most stoned-looking player I've ever seen on a card...
