Poppage breakthrough!! These are NOT opc :)

For those that are not familiar with these, they are 5x7 cards. They were produced with gray backs which are very common and white backs which are much more difficult.
The white backs were cut very bad and its very hard to find centered copies. Many come with little to no border. They also are known for very rough cuts like OPC cards.
Many cards also show surface wear right from the factory machine.
The highest graded cards out of the very few ever graded white backs was a PSA 8 in the 60 card set.
I sent in 11 cards, 3 not graded (PSA called me to inform me they ruined 3 cards by mistake and compensated me). They were up front about the problem and were very fair to me which I thanked them. Here are the other grades image These are the 1st 5 PSA 9 white backs ever graded!

Nice grades. I still have a bunch of those I picked up in the unopened 3 card packs. Had to put together a complete set of unopened with all the different cards in the set showing on the front.

Look how bad most of these cards come. Very difficult finding centered cards. Then when you find 1 centered, the borders are banged up or chipping.
    9's are very difficult image

Congrats on the grades. So are graded 1980 OPC Hockey Supers coming? lol.

I have a question for you on PSA ruining some of them on you. Do you know or were you told that it occurred in the encapsulating process? I had a few oversize cards I submitted last year that were assigned grades 9 and even 10s that when they came back, you can see light damage in the corners that wasn't there when sent in. It appears to be an issue with the oversize card getting pinched by the properties of the holder. 1979 Oilers postcards (and other large postcards like 1980 Quebec Nordiques) and 1983 Canadian National Juniors were the culprits. On the juniors, they are very, very thin cards and basically fill the entire large holder. The sleeve on the inside of the case (that seem unnecessary) seemed to have damaged the corners as it was sealed as it scratched or pinched the red borders near the corners making the card look overgraded in a 9 or 10 holder with a case-induced slight corner ding or small scratch. Due to this, unfortunately I won't send anymore to PSA for grading even though I wanted to have complete sets to put in the registry. :-(

I can remember finding these on Long Beach Island in NJ back in 1980 as a boy and losing my mind over them. I think I bought entire box over the course of the 2 week vacation.

    Such simpler times

They're white backs. The grey backs came in a box and were not wrapped.

Here's the box that the gray backs came in. The white backs were more expensive, something like 3 cards for a dollar, and the gray backs were only 15 cents each. There were 48 cards per box.

Thanks for the post. I had never heard of these until last week when I picked up a large lot of items that included several of these in white-back version (all whites, no grays). Most of them actually have nice centering but they would only grade between 4 & 7 depending on which ones they are, nothing really lower or higher. Is there a market for mid-grade, graded white-backs that makes it worth the fees, even with bigger names like Ryan, Brett, Rose, Schmidt? If they only cost as much as the standard or tallboy holder, then I would add them to a sub, but since the supersize holder grading is so much more of an investment per item, I'm thinking you don't even get back your fees unless you get a 7 or higher. Any thoughts?
