Buying Coins ? What do you use to pay when big $

I am looking at buying a collection and looking for a site that I can pay for it but be protected if they guy does not send the items. This is outside of eBay. Any suggestions?

Probably the best option is to use a third party. A trusted dealer might agree to broker the transaction for you. He sends the coin to the dealer, you send the money to the dealer, once the dealer verifies receipt of both, he sends each party their goods. The dealer will deserve a small fee for their help.

PayPal gives you protection even outside of eBay.
You can also use your CC for additional protection.
Though, you need to add 3% to your cost.

I guess its out of the question for him to send the collection to you first for your approval?

I have done this. Had a problem (I anticipated that I would and called Paypal before I even did the deal).
    Paypal made me completely whole.

In no way ever think about using PayPal gift there is no protection unless you pay them the fee.

Edit to add that adding the CC to the deal is another positive idea.

I flew to Florida once in the AM, met the guy at his bank, had the money wired, confirmed with my bank $$ arrival and was back in Seattle that night. image

I use a check, a wire transfer, cash, or a combination of those things, along with gold, silver and platinum coins...even other collectibles.

I mean, really.. it's a trade off. I would use a loan against my house if I wanted to. (as long as it's not over $400 and my girlfriend approves it )

What's the limit for PP? $10K? I'd find a dealer who could pick them up and ship them to you. Send dealer a check, dealer cashes check and buys the coins. Or you could send cash via registered mail to dealer. Dealers are used to handling large amounts of cash so it would probably not draw any attention from their banker when cashing a large check.

Not $10K. I arranged for $20k with the phone call. But, I will add that this was three years ago and maybe things
have changed. Yes, you have to pay the fee to get the guaranty.

If it's a full collection as stated this is the best route as your going to want to see it all in hand.

I sold for big $. Met buyer at his bank. He inspected coins and transferred cleared funds
to an account I opened at that bank to receive the funds.

It depends entirely on how big.

For the biggest deal I ever did I flew to his city and we did things in person.
    When in doubt, don't.

I expect that a PP gift for say $10K would probably get flagged and looked at very closely.
