1939-D Merc Dime - MS69 FB

This forum always seems to have plenty of merc dime collectors. David Lawrence just posted an NGC 1939-D MS69FB monster with original toning. At $8,200, does anyone want to take a chance that it would cross? Pic attached

  • PCGS might cross it at a 68 but that would be a 50 50 shootimage
I don't think I would take the chanceimage

  • Unless you have an endless supply of funds, you might get it crossed in 4 or 5 tries....image I cant see it happening.

Link doesn't work for me. But I doubt it would cross. I personally think that NGC overgrades their mint state coins from 1900-1950. Just my opinion.

Please fix the link! I'd love to see this one.
Mercury collectors: In a PCGS holder- would this one garner $10,000? I would think, "yes".

Wow, great coin (thanks for the LINK, dbl55)! I'd have been just a bit more impressed though if this one had been blazing, 100% white.

Will it cross? If you submit it and PCGS is under quota that month then it might. However, who cares? It's a piece of plastic surrounding a stunning coin.

  • I don't think PCGS would cross it for one reason, they are not particulary fond of toning on supergrade coins. Personally I like the toning.

This looks like one of the 39-D's that came out in that hoard about 6 years ago (??). TomB has one which I think is a 67 and is every bit as nice. Save your money...if you want one (I've seen them around) go for a lower grade.

The last 39-D MS-69FB that I saw sold for $ 15,000 about eight months ago. I believe that most if not all of the 69's are brilliantly toned coins. The one in my set is a toned 68FB that I tried to get upgraded to a 69FB but was told that while the color was gorgeous it wasn't bright enough to get into a 69. I'll keep trying with it.
The D.L. NGC 69FB doesn't look like it will cross and the price is way too high to take a chance on it. I figure that any NGC coins that I take a shot on must be between 20 to 30% of the price of a PCGS coin.
