Van Nuys Show June 30 - Is it a good show to buy PMs?

ndleondleo Posts: 4,136 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just started buying PMs. Made a few purchases at the Long Beach show a few weeks ago. Is the upcoming show in Van Nuys worth going for PM buyers? I checked the coin forum but I am more interested in the metal as opposed to graded coins.

There will probably be a selection of PMs for you to chose from if you chose to buy PMs. That said, the decision to buy is really an individual decision, much like picking a stock. We can all tell you how/why we buy PMs but those would be our reasons and our beliefs.

The bottom line is, you need to decide why you are buying and what you want to buy. Then, buy within those parameters.

  • I bet it will be interesting to say the least. I went to a few shows this last weekend in the Midwest and here is what I found. Keep in mind any dealer buying silver in the last 6 months is already upside down.

    1. ASE's, Maples all 5 dollars over plus some dealers had them at 7 over
    2. Generic 1 oz rounds, Silver town, APMEX, Golden State Mint etc etc should be 1.00 or less and cant be found most want 2-3 dollar premiums.

My advice is if your really needing to buy at this time wait till you see some .99 cent over sales at APMEX. It is almost happening weekly lately.

    Good Hunting

    Premiums seem high right now.

The BST or the thread here might offer opportunity. I have never bought bullion at a coin show.
    Have a nice day

Thanks guys. I've spent a lot of time reading about PMs over the past 6 months before finally pulling the trigger. I do have a question about he US Mint. Do they sell bulk to dealers? I was surprised at the price difference between the US Mint site and third party dealers. I would think the Mint would have one of the lower prices.

I go to all of the Van Nuys shows since I live nearby and have experience in dealing with just about every dealer that will be in that room. If prices go up just before the show, there will be lots of PMs available as some of those guys will jump on the opportunity to unload while prices are up a bit. But if prices are down from this point or about the same, most dealers will not even bring their PMs for sale as they refuse to take losses and would rather hold until the prices go back up. But, there are a couple of guys there that will bring some stuff and will sell at fair prices as they just buy and quickly sell at their set margins and don't really pay attention to the current prices as much... but if they're the only ones in the room selling that day expect their supply to go fast... be there when it opens.

The mint has an AP program Authorized Purchaser [sort of like a distributor/jobber] for regular gold and silver ASEs, but for all other collector items dealers and collectors are on their own.

If you are able to buy in quantity, why not get em from the same place a dealer does, unless you need only a few THAT day?

I live so far out from all "local"coin shows(tank of gas round trip usually). I find it more cost effective to buy onlineimage

That being said I still burn the gas for the shows. I'm coin collector first thoughimage
    Avid collector of GSA's.

Thanks for the advice. With the fall in gold today it might be slim pickins at the show.
