That's an amazing photo. Hard to believe Marichal only got a 9 game suspension. He'd see jail time today.

good article from the Seattle Times

what i find most compelling in the Seattle Times story is the reaction of Willie Mays.

he'd seen and felt so much anger and hatred perpetuated on his race and his game.

then, the game turned on itself in the midst of a period of universal anguish.

it was supposed to be a safe haven from all that reality when the players truly needed it.

he must have been so embarrassed that day.

That would be something considering John Roseboro passed away over 10 years ago

    << <i>look at Koufax...straight faced >>

That's always been the most compelling thing about this incident, to me. He's completely heedless of his own safety. That man has some big ones.

  • Koufax has a smirk because he knows Marichal is not getting past Roseboro. That guy was a man's man.

Marichal wasn't interested in Koufax, he wanted Roseboro.

As the story goes, Marichal made a Dodger hit the deck with a pitch, then Koufax returned the favor throwing up and in to Marichal. When Roseboro threw the ball back, he clipped Marichal's ear with it. Marichal turned around and things went sideways from there.

It would be a 1966 card, not 1965.

If it were a vintage card I would agree. However, a Topps Heritage set would use a 1965 card to show a 1965 event.

I never knew about this incident. Here is what Mr. Wiki has to say...

Roseboro was involved in an altercation with Dominican pitcher Juan Marichal during a game between the Dodgers and San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park on August 22, 1965.[1] Earlier in the game, Marichal had knocked down Dodgers Maury Wills and Ron Fairly with brushback pitches. When Marichal came up to bat against Sandy Koufax in the third inning, Koufax wouldn't retaliate, but his catcher, Roseboro, apparently wanted to. Roseboro returned Koufax's pitches dangerously close to Marichal's face (which is extremely difficult for a right-hand throwing catcher to do to a right-handed batter). Then, the future Hall-of-Famer hit Roseboro over the head with his bat three times, opening a two-inch gash that sent blood flowing down the catcher's face that would require 14 stitches. The Giants and the Dodgers, who nurture a heated rivalry with each other dating back to their days together in the New York market, and who were both strong contenders for the 1965 National League pennant, cleared their respective benches and began a 14-minute brawl on the field before Koufax, Giants captain Willie Mays and other peacemakers restored order. After the incident, NL president Warren Giles suspended Marichal for nine games, fined him $1,750, and also forbade him from traveling to Dodger Stadium for the final, crucial two-game series of the season. The Giants won both of them in the middle of a 14-game streak, but the Dodgers got even hotter later to win the pennant, and eventually defeated the Minnesota Twins in seven games in the World Series.
