What is the preferred way to collect a PSA graded set of 1996 & 1997 Mantle Refractors? With or Without the Coating?

    with. me likey shiny Mickeys.
  • At the risk of spending more money, send them both in and see what grades they get. If one gets less without the coating, then you will know why.

I do not own these. They are already slabbed and graded examples. Coated examples can be 10's and Un-Coated examples can be 10's too. The only difference is that PSA adds a designation of 'W/COATING' on the coated examples. I am trying to determine the preferred way to collect a set of these. It would drive me crazy to have some coated and some not.

It appears they are already graded. My position on this is simple. Peel them if your going to grade them. I have seen way too many cards with the peel get knocked down because of bubbles under the peel. I have bought PSA 9's with the coating. Cracked, peeled and re-subbed and gotten 10's. Im sorrry but I wouldn't want words taking away from the micks face on my cards.

Edit to add: With coatings do not bring a premium.

As I essentially only collect 1990's Finest basball refractors I feel uniquely qualified to answer this question.

There is no premium associated with graded cards that have the peel on.

Since they detract from the card, why leave them on?

As far as preferred by collectors, the PSA population report would show numbers very much in favor of peeled.
Always looking for 1993-1999 Baseball Finest Refractors and1994 Football Finest Refractors.

Man, that is one aspect of modern master sets I don't miss- having all those stinkin' Finest refractors with and without refractors being part of the set...ugh

I always equated, and assumed PSA would as well, the coatings on the Finest cards to the scratch off portion found on 1980 Topps Hockey, for example. They are much easier to get 10's on without the coating, for sure. And they look better that way. But to me, a Gem Mint card should be perfect as issued.
