Who has the most unopened?

With all this chatter about unopened "drying up" I thought it would be interesting to see who really has what and rank the collections. From digging through this board I've come up with:

1. Mintmoondog (cases and boxes from 79 to 85)
2. CPAMike (lots of racks from 70 to 79)
3. Grote (racks from late 70s)

My collection is mostly opened so would not rank high at all. What about you?

If you are including dealers Larry Fritsch has the most unopened stuff from the 70's and probably still has some unopened stuff from the late 60's as well. I have not been to his place since the 80's but when I was last there Jeff showed me around. When I was there it was totally set up to handle mail order and not really a card shop but I was able to check everything out. The one thing that sticks in my head is the amount of 1968 Topps they had at the time. I know a lot of their unopened has been slowly sold but I would think they still have a pretty good supply left.

As far as guys on the board, I think MacrosB has to be close to number 1. I've linked to his fine thread below.

Methinks we're understating Mike's stash just a smidgen by saying his claim to fame is lots of racks from '70-'79.

He uses a 1974 wax box as a pillow, for crying out loud.

I bought a card off of ebay the other day and with it came one shiny pack of 1989 Topps baseball (for free!). That is the extent of my unopened collection.

Of course there is an award. Here it is! Once the winner is determined I will mail it to the lucky individual post-haste if not sooner!

  • Funny thread, you should proably ask your top 3 who they admire. It's an ok list but a rookie coming in here and asking that question is equivalent to Bryce Harper running full speed into the outfield wall. Good initiative, bad judgement!

Edited to add: There are a few guys smirking right now at your top 3, including the ones in the top 3.

Griffins wins any and all unopened collection contests. Everyone else is playing for a DISTANT second place. It's not even a discussion.

Without knowing what all Mike and Tim have stored, I will go with MacrosB and DCanfield.

  • OP, you obviousy missed this thread by MacrosB, enjoy!

    MacrosB Welcome Aboard Thread

  • I'd have to be ranked way down the list! image I believe CPA Mike and Tim have great unopened material from the 70s and I am pretty sure there are at least 1/2 dozen "whales" out there with incredible collections that might go back further.
I only got interested in actually keeping and not ripping the unopened I purchase when I started sensing that quantities were much more shallow than the prices indicated. I believe that has been substantiated regarding the 70s. I stopped ripping all my 70s purchases the past few years, but then found almost nothing for sale at any price. The 80s are now open for debate with opinions on both sides and the different years, perhaps, each having their own story.
What is interesting to me is that, regarding the 70s, unopened seemed to rise in prices much more quickly than high grade PSA graded cards - but recently, cards have been catching up (perhaps a classic economic lag effect). For example, 1973 Schmidt, and 1975 Brett rookies have touched 2K. I don't sense any "bubble" behavior but a long over-due price correction based on low supply and some new collectors coming back to cards

I would have to think the guys that have the most un-opened are not on these boards......Steve eluded to this on one of his posts.
