"This is from my private collection"

Why do people put that in their listings?

As opposed to what, your other collection displayed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art?

My guess is that it has more sentimental value that way instead of buying and flipping.

  • It could mean that the card was set aside as the best possible example the collector had ever seen at that point.

However, it could also be just as significant as 'this was my grandfather's card' or 'this was in my cheating husband's collection'

Yeah, unless your name was Andy Warhol, I don't think the "private collection" gimmick does much to add value.
  • I think its to imply that they are the "original" owner. Much like a car where someone states they are the original owner to suggest either more care was given to it, or it has not been tampered with beyond what the owner did to it.

But I agree, I dont think it really means much.

For the same reason why people put "rare" in their listings.

I hear what your saying...but some folks have a collection such as a dealer who takes stuff to shows to sell ( public) but he has his own collection too and its private to him. They dont trade or sell it at shows. You can say it may be their untouchable stuff unless something else comes along.
  • A collector who also sells (at least in my case) would keep the best example for there own collection so if a seller / collector
Says it’s from there private collection it would indicate (to me anyway) it’s the best example they have.

Could mean his private collection is the good stuff and you dont want to see the stuff he offers for sale.
    Wait a minute!!??

Some people believe such statements add legitimacy and provenance to their items; some want to convey why their long cherished personal item is worth bidding on and winning.

This. However, I doubt the effectiveness of this marketing ploy unless you're a well known collector. If I sold cards from some of the sets in my personal collection, they would represent the best of several similar graded examples I've owned through the years. However, potential buyers wouldn't care if I stated it came from my personal collection. The better marketing strategy would be to just state in the description something like 'this is the best example of the five PSA 8's I've owned' and then provide a nice, clear scan of the card so the potential bidders can see its strength.

Absolutely agree with you. I was not advocating this as a good marketing strategy just giving my opinion on why someone may make such a statement and how I would
    interpret its meaning

I can only assume it is like "since it's from my private collection, I may not know the REAL value of the item compared to if I was a dealer and am fully aware of the value" and stuff like that.

Maybe it means "it's the stuff I don't put out on the sidewalk, on top of a blanket, hoping that any Tom, Dick or Harry will pass by and make me an offer". image
