If You Like Jordans & Scans...

So I've been searching long and hard for an MJ Fleer RC that was both well-centered and just as importantly, had little if not zero chipping along the blue portions of the border. This card is easy to find in general, I know, but sometimes when we have particular characteristics we are looking for, you know how it can be tougher than it would at first seem.

I would show my previous copy which was very nice to buddies or relatives who would listen (their eyes glazing over with boredom) and explain how the blue-area chipping would bug me. Of course they thought I was nuts, but here people understand, lol.

Anyways I put some feelers out and a really solid card broker came up clutch for me, tracked this one down, and because there were no ebay fees or AH fees or PayPal fees, it cost its lowest since 2012. This card, to me, is like the King Kong of modern. Fired up. Still working the kinks out of this new scanner and so there is some dust around the bottom area, but the dust correction feature keeps removing pixels of the card itself.

Boo-ya:

Anytime anywhere I see a scan of this card or the actual card, I always stop and admire it-- any grade, any holder, I just love the image. MJ tortured me as a Knicks fan but I always had tremendous respect for his unparalleled game, drive, and killer instinct. To win every finals in which you appear AND win Finals MVP? He and Ruth really are similar in how they brought their games to new levels of popularity, and became cultural if not global icons. It is hard to find modern cards that truly have great value and this, to me, has always been the standout. I remember reading Orlando's great coffee table book about the top 250 sportscards, and he said something to the effect of the Jordan Fleer is the most important modern card period. I really agree. It is true that it is easily found and the Star (which I love) is kind of mythic, but the demand and popularity of the Fleer is pretty wild.

Another thing I love about MJ is how he never got stupid with a rap album or wearing absurd isht to postgame interviews. He never put his personal life on blast to enhance his fame like so many "celebrities" do today. While maintaining utter dominance on the court, he also was a smart businessman who built an amazing brand-- I marvel at how his sneakers are still insanely popular to this day, and collected like crazy in their own right.

First time I saw MJ play was a game vs Kentucky right after Christmas 1981. His Freshman year. First time I thought "Wow, this guy is great" wasn't the shot vs Georgetown, but rather the next season in a game vs Ralph Sampson's UVA team. As a UNC fan, broke my heart that he left after the 84 season but he was NBA ready. It took a few years, Bird and Magic had to slow down and disappear but eventually MJ got his just NBA rewards . And did it without dressing like a clown (see Wade) among other things. Oh, gambling rumblings and a few other things but they didn't draw attention things do, or would now. Along with Magic Johnson, two greatest players I've ever seen. By a lot. image

First the Ruth rookie, now a stellar MJ rookie. I foresee a '79 OPC Gretzky and maybe a high grade Jim Brown rookie, if I'm picking up on a trend here. Congrats, Matt!

It's nice, but I'm not crazy about that chipping in the blue area of the card

Thx you nearly gave me a panic attack!

I was in such a good mood today from the card, spoke to a colleague who asked, "Why are you in such a good mood today?" I was about to start explaining and then realized it would be futile, lol. The internet may suck in a multitude of ways but this whole ability to bs about cards with fellow collectors and see scans of cards all the time is a pretty good-sized rock on the "pro" side of the scale.

Beautiful card Matt....you SHOULD be in a good mood after picking that baby up. I'd recommend anti-depressants if you weren't lol

Big80's called it and said exactly what I said...there is a Gretzky Rookie in your future. Unfortunately, I own the nicest copy but the 2nd nicest one might still be out there!

The more I look at that Jordan, the more I wonder if it would make it in a BGS Pristine Holder

Awesome pickup! That card is iconic. I imagine you've been happy all day....I know I wouldn't be able to stop looking at it! Congrats!

I know I am going to catch some flack for saying it, but if I am going to spend that much money for a card, it better be 50/50 all the way around. and yeah I know about how
cards are graded, but it is neither 50/50 LR or 50/50 TB and that would bother me.

    Glad you are happy.

    Hello Walt,

Yes, it is the example that pleases me most, after seeing many of them over the years. We all each have our own taste when it comes to cards. Usually I am very much a centering guy, but for this card (as long as it fell within proper guidelines) what mattered to me most was those colorful edges. If I ever find one with equal edges that has even better centering, I'll make a move accordingly.

    Best,

    Matt

  • The 51/49 centering would kill it for me too image

seriously amazing PSA 10 there. Card is stunning. Such bold, vibrant color. They put at in the right slab IMO. I wonder if that would make it into the Pristine 10 as well, it can certainly hang with the one sold back in 2009.
  • Truly an iconic card, even for those that do not collect basketball. I myself have little to no desire in basketball - except for that card.

    Great copy! Congrats!!

Nice job landing such a fine example

Thanks fellas! Would be better all hanging at the national talking cards but this will have to suffice. 12 beers in and now it looks even better, lol. Now it's time to let a bunch of teenagers kill me on xbox Black Ops 2.
  • To me, that is the card of all cards for basketball. Modern or vintage.

Very Very Nice Matt! I'm with you, I could never get tired of that card. It's such an iconic set, and the pose on the Jordan RC sums him up so well. Very well done. You have added some monster cards to your collection lately. I am really going to enjoy watching you add to your collection, I hope your going to share new additions as you pick them up.
  • thunderdanthunderdan Posts: 3,036 ✭✭✭
That one is definitely on my list. Love the card, the pose, the set, and the player. If you're going to won one basketball card, that would be one of a few to own.

    Congrats.

A few months ago I was piecing together this set in extra-minty form, but I capitulated about a fourth of the way through. While doing so, it literally got to a point where my eyes (initially) became fixated on the edges rather than centering. Locating exemplars that are completely devoid of chippiness (especially along the right border) is a real task -- even with 10s. And that's why I'm digging yours so much, Matt. Appears to be smoother than a baby's bottom around the perimeter. Hell of an acquisition, bruh.

you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet

    I personally wouldn't risk that

If this card was from 1952. It would be worth 10x what a 1952 Mantle is today. Not sure about that but. Its an amazing card in todays era for sure!! Hope you get my meaning.
Big time card at this point in time.
Very cool item with great history and stats!

    Galaxy,

It seems we have the same taste when it comes to this set design. The edges when chipped really grab your eye in a bad way. Conversely, when you see edges with a smooth look and solid blue, it just becomes a stand-out.

It's interesting how different sets wind up having different characteristics collectors look for. I know with 74 for example, no tilt is the main thing I look for, and will forgive other things with no tilt. With 79s, if the bottom flag runs perfectly parallel to the bottom border, that is special to me. Each set design kind of has its own idiosyncracies to different collectors.

I also tried to build a PSA 9 86 F set a year or 2 ago and found it too tedious, expensive, and at the end of the day a big loss. It is my favorite looking set outside of baseball and agree with others that it's the perfect picture for the moment and the icon that is Jordan
