Mail man just dropped this off my newest addition

As a huge fan of Roger Maris, I am VERY happy to have this new addition into my collection. I have been looking at Maris cards waiting for a nicely centered ones to show up and I just couldn't pass up on this one knowing that centering like this doesn't really show up on these 8's - at least not for his 1960 card. Also his first card in a Yankees uniform. So excited!!

Wow that is a nice looking card.

I bet you couldn't wait for the mailman to show up!

That's a beauty! Seems like a perfect example of a card that should get the .5 bump.

Either way, GREAT card to add to your collection!

That is a fine, fine example! Definitely would not look out of place in a PSA 9 holder! Congrats!!!

Isn't this what our hobby is ALL about? Nothing like reverting to our childhood days-- the days before bills, unfulfilled dreams, taxes, work, etc.? You really hit the spirit of it right there.

That said: SICK CENTERING. Why not a 9? I guess who cares because a 9 would've cost more! Great effing card.

I mean, am I missing something because it hits my eye like a 10.

I completely agree. Is there a touched corner on the backside of the card?

Depending on back or wrinkle that can be readily seen under loupe, I've got a twenty that says it bumps.
  • Guys, thank you so much for the comments. It makes me even feel better about the card. I agree Matt, this thing should of been an 8.5 I think. But when I look at Matt Millers 8.5 Aaron, THAT thing should of been a 9.

I'll scan the back here in a few and post to show you guys. I don't want to dissect the card because its not a perfect 10. It has its minor flaws but the only thing I see is the top right corner. The back even looks as strong and evenly centered as well. I did pay a huge premium for this card when comparing its current average to VCP but as Cincy as told me in the past, the card you regret is the one you didn't get and I couldn't have that happen with this one.

    Foo,

There is absolutely nothing ever wrong with paying a premium over VCP avg to have the best specimen in its grade-- and I'd be hard pressed to find a better 8 of that card. I would wager it has more eye appeal than a few of those graded higher, as well.

Sometimes when you have a card and know sure as the sun will rise that it could have been graded higher, it gets frustrating. Especially if upon review the TPG doesn't budge. But think of it this way: if it got the higher grade, you would have paid more or maybe not been able to get it at all. So under-grading might suck once a card is in-hand, but it can be a great thing when buying!
  • congradulations

Prime example of why I always write congrats on bday cards for people at work and not "congratulations". I can never spell that correctly. I'm not kidding either, I had to go to Dictionary.com just to see the correct spelling and then I pasted it on here. That one always gets me too. I'll get it right one of these days. lol

I think if you are investing in cards you want to be buying the cards that sell for huge premiums to the VCP average. These are the cards like this that look fantastic and quite frankly to anyone who doesn't collect cards look perfect.

This was an excellent purchase to fill the slot in your collection for this card.

It has to be a great thrill to have it in your hand. I got a chance to handle a few cards I just got back from PSA and there is a special feeling of having this handheld piece of plastic that holds a really cool trading card. I love the PSA holder. You can flip through them like you would with a stack of cards and this is one of the features that makes me like the PSA slab the most.

Great card!!! Probably my favorite basic issue Maris.
  • Ok, so here is the back. The top 2 corners look slightly touched which may indeed fit the PSA 8 bill after all. Oh well, best PSA 8 I could have gotten I feel.

I think PSA 8 is the right grade and I would take slightly touched corners on the back over the front all day.

This is still a very strong card.

That, without a doubt, is an incredibly strong 8 and well worth a premium above VCP average.

That card is the centerpiece of a collection! Nicely done. I love the 59 Maris too, and the 62. Would love to pick up his 58 but that may not happen.

Hiding the flip, my nanosecond guess was a 9. That card is blazing a trail, Marc.
