Dmitri Young Redeux

With high end cards really sky rocketing as of late, I was thinking last night had Dmitri Young waited another year and auctioned off his collection today, what do you think the overall difference in hammer price today would be versus last year?

There is no science behind this, but I am going to say his collection would bring 20% more than last year, which would equate to approximately $600K.

Lastly, If you won a card from last years auction, and still own it, please feel free to share it. I haven't scanned it, but I own the 86 Topps Traded Bo Jackson PSA 10.

I don't own any cards from the Dimitri Young collection but I agree with you MbMiller that prices would probably go even higher today compared to last year.

I thought MANY of his cards commanded ridiculous prices based on the quality. The most glaring example was the 1954 Topps Kaline Psa 10 which had the appearance of a Psa 8 sample. The card had THREE pink spots on the red backround, was slightly off-center L/R, and the green back had slight chipping to the edges.

Some of the auctions were prime example's of buying a holder not the card.

ok, so Matt is speculating that the high end label value has increased by 20%.....what's in a name?

Good point, his 1975 Mini psa 10 Yount and Brett rookies were completely beheaded or were a mini variation of the mini card...ridiculous actually.

I think what we're really saying here is that some 10's are nicer than others. I agree with that. You'll see that in anyone's collection. But Dmitri's collection included some very high end 10's as well... The Kaline was a poor example indeed, but not representative of the entire collection. Also, as we've discussed before, having Dmitri's name on the label increases the value of the cards in auctions that have run post the SCP auction.

  • I have not examined them thoroughly, but remember seeing ads for them in addition to the article. This was at the beginning of my reprisal to collecting cards, so you could imagine my amazement when I saw all these PSA 10's in his collection.

I had noticed some people do not like the flip with his name on it. I personally thought of that as a good way to identify the history of the card, but I could be wrong on that notion. I would imagine the collection where it came from would add some value to it as well. What are your thoughts?
  • I remember reading an article in a newspaper (I think one of the Detroit papers) on the sale...he implied that he took a substantial loss on his cards but was happy with the amount he ended up with. I agree with the OP that he could have received significantly more today then he did then.

I respect the impressive collection as a whole, but just because Mr. Young's name was on it did very little for me.

As for the theory that they would command higher prices today, for the most part, I do not think so. Maybe some of the cards from the 60's or 70's, but that 1980's stuff has been making a second go-around on ebay has not been selling for more than originally. Why pay 2.5X the price for his name?

I see this being the next Jose Canseco gimmick. Charge people a fee for him to submit cards with 'Canseco Collection' on the label.

Canseco doesn't have a great card collection. Dmitri had the finest collection of RC's that the industry have ever seen. 100 years from now, people will still be talking about his collection and the SCP auction when his collection was passed along to the marketplace.

I agree that it all comes down to the specific card in question. That SCP auction featured some amazing specimens that were worthy of the grade-- cards like this attract guys who buy the card and guys who buy the holder. Then there are specimens that lack 10 eye appeal-- these tend to make a good many collectors pass, because they don't want to spend that premium money unless the card matches the grade. Unfortunately, flips have been known to blind a man image

End of the day, we are the market and we essentially "grade the graders" with our wallets. It goes for any grade. If the card is strong or even undergraded, it will bring everyone to the party and likely perform more like the next grade up, pricewise. I remember when I first looked through VCP's past sale scans and realized how multiple cards with the same grade can have wildly different eye appeal and in turn cost very different amounts.

Sidenote, but that is what always salts me: when a seller quotes a VCP sale of a stellar example for the grade, but is offering me an example that is nowhere near the same quality. "But it's the same grade," I am told. I then politely encourage them to find someone who buys the grade image

Maybe I have too much time on my hands too image because I had thought the same thing. But then while sitting on my throne contemplating my empire one morning, I thought maybe the opposite is actually the case - that the open pricing from the Dimitri Young auction caused the prices of all cards to increase on a relative basis. Sort of like a "raising tide lifts all boats" situation.
