Rest in Pieces 1981 Cello Box

Rule Number 1: rip the packs with stars on top first.

Then casually bring the box through a slow death over the course of two weeks or whenever time available.

Nice Yaz. Did this come from dugout?

    Thanks,

  • yeah. one of those boxes with the gum removed. I thought, what the heck, if the box is good, may actually have two less stained cards per pack. so far so good.

Yaz looks good. Is that a tough one?

McGraw WS card looks sharp, too.

What do you mean by the gum removed?
  • ldfergldferg Posts: 6,745 ✭✭✭
dugout had some 81 cello's that had a slit in the side to remove the gum to keep from damaging the cards with gum residue over time. I purchased one as well.

    Thanks,

Interesting. As long as the packs are not tampered with it sounds like a nice idea.

Did they remove the star packs in the process?

The seller bought a bunch of boxes where the original owner cut a slit in the sides of the cello boxes and removed the gum. I guess his thinking was that the gum would damage the cards over time. Not good for an unopened collector, but great for someone who is ripping. The slit was just big enough to remove the gum without the cards being able to be pulled out.

My packs were fine, but the box appeared to be 'made up' from several boxes.

    Thanks,

It would seem that this could affect the coalition of the box.

Do these boxes sell for a steep discount to others?
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,743 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes, these boxes iirc were priced lower than his other '81 cello boxes for sale.

It did affect the collation. The collation yielded from my box is why I'm almost certain the box was made from misc packs. I do think the packs were legit as described.

Dugout offered these boxes at a discount rate (Roughly $110) compared to $160 for a non-altered pack cello box.

Chouser, how was the collation on your box?

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

Nice!..too bad that was not a more acceptable method of preserving cello packs but I understand why its not.

I wonder how much they sold the gum for image
  • I only opened 3 packs so far. Very slow with this stuff at times Two Yaz's, two Eckersly's in the three packs along with other dupes in the same order. I believe when I bought this there was something mentioned on the site about getting 'at least two star on top packs guaranteed' in the box - totally support these are a mix up of different boxes. Can't beat the deal though as even with just the three packs opened, getting fairly decent stuff. Many off center but so it goes. Many very well centered though. May take a week or so but will post the good cards as they come in. The middle two cards where the gum was have zero stain or even dust on them.

he's got a few more on ebay but it looks like he is raising the prices now and only doin BIN. I do trust this box, at least the packs to be legit gum yanked packs.

edit after opening more packs.. the mid section split of cards does have gum dust in between the cards. it simply brushes off though so still no stain or gum damage
  • New to the boards my question is what would you grade the Robin Yount? How hard do psa grade the centering from top to bottom? Thx
  • Dpeck100Dpeck100 Posts: 10,912 ✭✭✭✭✭
I would say EX-MT on the Yount.

  • yeah, the yount as far as grading goes is at max a 7 off center. but the first yaz is perfect on the front, but off center on the back. did just get a Henderson that looks very very nice. front and back, can;t find a flaw. will post when my wife gets off the upstairs puter. as far as the sequencing discussion before, i am getting duplicates fast. the henderson was in the following sequence of cards

    #68 matt alexander
    #477 luis gomez
    #438 john montefusco
    #261 Henderson.

the three cards before henderson were off center but this henderson looks like a 9 (hopes 10 ? nahh, never for me) centered perfectly with no corner flaws. this is only 8 packs in. if an 81 fan, i'd go buy the guys boxes. no chance a henderson like this would be in here if the packs had been bbg'd. am stuck here now, got to open rest of box and will post results tonight or morning. the other 1980 thread with the guy with two ROOKIE hendersons got me all pumped.

edit 1704 MST: a second pack with the same sequencing (they may have all been like this but didn't care about the cards) exactly as above:

    #68 matt alexander
    #477 luis gomez
    #438 john montefusco
    #261 Henderson.

and i'm gunna bet both these hendersons get a 9 grade, but the three previous cards were all off center.
  • The best of the Hendersons is the one on the right - but that one looks like an 8 with because of some bottom chipping and that top right coner. Tough cards.
  • just went through the mind zoning task of separating the 'centered' card from the cards that have no chance to survive. the left stack is the 'centered' cards, with slight leniency. the right stack is the cards that are off center to the point of 'ungradeable' . as mentioned though, going through these was mind numbing zone state for 15 minutes during while watching the nascar race.

the off center cards will shortly go through a swimming exercise.

I will say that is a heck of a lot of gradeable centered cards for a cello box. You may want to remove the ones you were more lenient with before grading.
    Nikklos
  • understood on that. not grading any of 'em besides a few I pulled out. the 'good' stack could be cut down to probably 15 cards.

but the cards that made the initial departure have now experienced their fate.

    Their initial journey

LOL, that gives new definition to the term "moisture damage."

I've always had a soft spot for 81s, as it was the first set I ever opened packs of as a kid.

Seeing those cards in the pool image

  • damn, I would have bought the OC ones image

I need a Lance Parrish if you have a nice centered one to sell

You could always donate to kids in the hospital.
  • I actually did that recently, sent over a 3200 count box of hockey (it is Hockeytown after all)
  • Well, it looks more work cleaning it up than it might have been just tossing them in the garbage. I have tossed the remainder of an 89 Fleer box, but I would have kept 81 Topps to compile a set or something. But, I get pretty much the same reaction to those photos as when I see this image:

no. kids in the hospital would like simple colored paper and pencils. stop with worthless card baseball card donations to kids in the hospital. they do not want them. they will get excited about anything. and plain paper with a lot of pencils and pens they like more. pull your head out.

there is no kid in any hospital that likes to get baseball cards of anyone they do not idolize. buy them pens/pencils and blank paper

good golly, get with 2013 . sorry reality left

Chouser, you are a real man. Your right about the hospital donation stuff and for putting those miserable off centered, crooked, chipped, dinged, non-caring Topps produced boys in the drink. Great mission sir, you took the tough but correct action. Thanks for the picts!

One of the most bizzare threads ever.

Im happy as now my PSA 7 OC Dan Schatzeder just went up as there is one less in the world.

Also while I may not do this myself, I agree that no hospitalized children today want 1981 commons.
  • was more a hassle getting them out of there than worth this. image

I can't remember actually laughing out loud at something on this message board. Something about that box floating in the pool just cracked me up. Thanks for the laugh!
