Julius Erving Rookie Crossover Opinions Wanted

I bought this 1972 Erving Rookie for a great price figuring I would take a chance. It obviously seems to good to be true but I am a sucker for a deal. I am planning on trying to crossover at the National. I have held a pack pulled common up to the case and it appears to be the same size but I am no expert. Would love to have everybody's thoughts even if it is just from a scan?

Thanks!

Dustin

  • Great looking card and best of luck. As long as you aren't cracking and asking for a crossover no harm can come of this, I assume they don't crack it out to review? I always ask myself if it could be in a PSA or SGC or BGS holder why wouldn't it, people must know they are leaving big money on the table.

Let us know how it goes. I'd love to get that card one day!

If they're like me, they're probably just trying to flip some of the stuff they're not interested in from the latest collection they bought. Is it better to sell in a off-brand holder as a 10 or wait 2+ months and take a chance it comes back much less? I'll pass that gamble on to someone else any day of the week and hope they get a great deal while offsetting some of my expenses.

Sweet card and best of luck to the OP.
  • Thanks! It seems to be a very tough card to grade a 9. Although I have seen some awful looking examples of 9's. If mine is not altered or trimmed I would hope for a 9. Of course no 10's have ever been slabbed by PSA.

I agree. It's just human nature to look down on the slab of another company. If it's unaltered, it's an 8 on a (holdered) crossover. It may very well be a 9 on a straight (non-holdered) submission. But you have to weigh how much money you have into it.

The old SCD holders, like this one, were usually very good at catching alterations, and the grades were usually very close to PSA-SGC specs. That is a 9 all day at PSA if they don't deem it altered. We know that can go either way on any card, even fresh out of a pack from BBCE.

The plan to cross over at the National is a good one. You can get an idea from someone at PSA as to what you should do. Who knows, you may need a security guard with you when you get it back. The first 10 would be huge.

Double, very nice card, I think a 9 is calling your name.

Yours certainly looks much nicer than the PSA 9 that is presently listed on ebay.
  • Thanks! I will hope for the best. It will be exciting at least image

I have seen people on the board posting about some of the Sports Collectors Digest cards with the "old label" are good. What are the differences that you look for in deeming a SCD graded card reliable in grade?
  • gameusedhoopgameusedhoop Posts: 3,593 ✭✭✭✭
Red logo label is the Sports Collector's Digest. The Blue logo label is something else...although I don't now exactly what it stood for. A quick ebay search should show one.

Edit: found one, "Sports Cards Direct"

Superb looking card!! Looks very 9 worthy, the centering looks dead on and the back is not far off too

It's even missing the print dot below his elbow that is found on the majority of them

But what is the red dot on the right border by the top of the S ????

    Agreed.

This is the best looking DrJ I've seen. No fisheye on elbow. Looks like very slight print marks top left. Definitely 10 potential if unaltered.

Best of luck. This would be a major score.

    Thanks,

  • Thanks guys. I think the red mark is a small print defect.

To me it looks unaltered. Old scd red label are usually not bad.

In that case an easy 8 maybe more.

  • I'd say it will come back a solid 8, maybe an 8.5 that back is a bit off center...but envious, I want a Dr J rookie at any grade imageimage

Most the 9's I have seen are more off center on the back than mine. Will see.

Im dying to see the results of this. I wont be surprised if its a 9 or 10.

If it's not altered, it should be a lock 9. Then if you get the 9 you can send it in a few times for a bump. Good luck.

I would send it to SGC first & have them grade it -- in its holder.

Red SCD label should be legit
    Enjoy your collection!

Dustin..... Congrats on the pickup and I'm hoping you get the crossover. That card is notorious for a fisheye around his left elbow and your card is spotless. Your card is one of the prettiest DJ rookie I have ever seen.

I don't know anything about this issue, and I hope everything is kosher with this card; but....
is the area I marked in red normally like that on the card? IMO, I don't like the top edge from the back view.
It is inconsistent with the other three edges on the back.

  • Not sure what you mean by the top edge. I do have alot of packed pulled commons that seem inconsistent as well. But who knows I am not an expert. As far as the edges you marked in red they are scratches in the case.

    Ok, that's good to hear.

    Good luck.
