40,000 Feet Up - Bumpy Ride - Three Vodkas In - Hate Flying - Two New Poor-Graded Pickups

So the title of this thread pretty much says it all. Assuming this flight ever lands intact, I will be pumped to spend a great deal of time staring at these two latest pickups.

Had been after these two cards forever, but finding eye appeal in low grade can be a major effing challenge. I always try to keep in mind that beggar's can't be choosers, and that low grade examples will tend to look the part.

That said, there is definitely a line between a card with character and an utter lack of eye appeal. This is why I flipped out when I came across these two specimens. Might be time for next Vodka. This Bloody Mary mix is definitely not going to drink itself.

Great work on the Ruth, Matt - fantastic eye appeal! I know that one has been a bear. I'm glad you were able to find one you liked! Congrats again.

Both backs have a tiny bit of paper loss-- which is the best thing ever for someone who couldn't pay what they would grade without that paper loss. The loss especially on the Ruth is so minimal. I am very, very thankful for the grading rules that make these automatic 1s.

I saw several Ruth 2s and 3s that would've cost me much more, and they looked so much worse. I then realized this was like the ultimate case of buying the card and not the holder. I'm talking bear-mauled rugged for these 2s especially: OC, creases, darkly toned surfaces, really rough.

There are no stats or artwork on the versos of these cards, so I just don't find myself admiring the backs at all. So for me, these were absolute great values.

As a Yankee fan and baseball card collector since boyhood, the ultimate to me was always the undisputed rookie card of the game's most legendary name, and likely its greatest player ever.

I wonder what will happen first: this plane ride smooths out or I exhaust the flight's vodka supply.
  • Awesome pick ups. Especially the Ruth. I need that one for my set and I hope I can find one as nice as that. Great Job!!!!

Thanks a million. I'm sure most of us do not have many immediate friends who collect, so when pumped, these boards become a great way to share excitement. In my case turbulence/vodka-induced excitement.

I have to say that since I began to take the plunge into PreWar, I am very impressed by the aesthetic of these SGC holders. They make cards look positively majestic. For 50s to 70s I of course love PSA and the values for those Post War PSA cards upon resale speak for themselves. But I can totally see why so many PreWar aficionados prefer their SGCs. Again, taking NOTHING away from PSA. I have mostly PSA slabs as my collection is still predominantly postwar. It's just the black SGC background that makes certain cards pop to the eye, and I love the way the plastic is molded-- without an obvious seal on the sides. Just nice design.

It would be very hard to find 1s with better eye appeal than those. Well done.
  • MattyCMattyC Posts: 1,335 ✭✭
    Ergo,

With your collection rapidly approaching museum-quality stature, I take that as a major compliment. Thanks, bro.

My thinking has always been: if I can't get the best one of all (which is almost always the case, lol), then get the best one in its grade. It's a collecting philosophy that has served me well over the years. Before pulling the trigger I have to try and see as many specimens in the grade as possible. Then when I finally find one that stands out way above the others in its grade, it's go-time.

Eye appeal is terrific on those cards for the grade.

That Cobb is awesome, has it all in my opinion...eye appeal, good color, centered AND a great looking pose.

For the grade its an instant winner, congrats!

    Perk,

Thanks-- I remember the first time I laid eyes on this Cobb card in a catalog. It struck me instantly. I think it is one of the great-looking cards in our beloved hobby. This one and the CJ Cobb stand out for me. The background color is so unique, the shape, and his eyes capture his amazing, surly, fighter's spirit. I know it isn't exactly a slept-on card, with examples having commanded crazy loot. But I was pretty impressed by the low pop overall in both companies.

These are cards I intend to be buried with. Unless my son proves himself worthy. And if it does not wind up in my skeletal, dead grasp and some as-yet unborn grandkid sells it-- I will do my best to haunt that punk until he loses his mind. Kind of like in Young Sherlock Holmes when dudes were jumping out of windows because they were freaked out. But I digress.

Matt, Those are absolutely fantastic cards! Congratulations on adding such a huge card in that Ruth to your collection.

Hope that flight smooths out for you!

I spoke to some of my closer boys on the board via PM as the Ruth auction was closing and ended. I was seriously staring in utter disbelief that my very max bid managed to hold on and win. I had mad sweaty hands. I kept expecting some extra OT to kick in and my bid to get whacked by some older billionaire or something.

    Miller,

This flight is garbage. That said I am beginning to realize that vodka cures all. 3 more hours then I will kiss the Venice Beach sand upon arrival. Then again at this pace I may eat fistfuls of said sand like Bateman from American Psycho (the novel). Either way, it's a win-win.

I remember those days when I had to fly to LAX every couple weeks from NC to spend time at our Redondo Beach office. I hated those flights, and drank just like you. Bloody Mary were my friend.

Obviously I know the background on the Ruth as we were talking, but what's the back story on the General Baking Cobb? That's a real beauty a well.

  • Matty, your card collection is pretty darn sick and those new additions - even though 1's look AMAZING. The centering alone will give it that extra premium kick if you ever intend to sell and upgrade. I swear I live vicariously through some of you on these boards. I agree that its awesome when you can share some new pick ups on these boards and get some responses because as you mentioned, there's no one that I really know (except when I go to card shows) who collects or who can truly appreciate such as most members on this board can.

    Miller,

It is a very tough set notable for its wonderful color images. Stand-out images, really. It was issued primarily in Buffalo, NY. They had a few different back ads: Brunners, Butter Krust, General Baking Co., Weber Bakery, and Martens Bakery, I believe. The bottom line with this card and its set brethren is that it does not come up for sale that often, as VCP will bear out.

Put it this way: only 15 examples in all backs exists, graded by PSA. I can't check SGC pop report now as I forgot my login, but I think it brings TOTAL graded examples to like 28. Which is pretty nasty. That is just a bonus though, as it is really the image that speaks to me. I saw one a grade higher but they leap to 10k+ at that level. The 1s are do-able price wise, but as VCP will show, they are hurt like Burt. Hence why a 1 with eye appeal got me all fired up.

    100 year-old cards are awesome!

Matty - Huge grats on two fronts. One, I know how long and how bad you wanted that Ruth. Two, those are a pair of unbelievable cards for the grade. Phenomenal eye appeal. Very happy for you!

Los Angeles, CA (AP) - LAX bound Delta flight #248 was diverted to Salt Lake City (SLC) earlier today after a severely inebriated Venice Beach resident allegedly charged the flight cabin while screaming "1916 M101-4 SGC 10 RUTH BEYOTCHES!" repeatedly at crew members. The suspect was removed from the aircraft for questioning before it continued on, eventually arriving safely in Los Angeles, albeit more than two hours late as a result.

A Department of Homeland Security official, who asked not to be identified as he is not authorized to speak to the media, spoke to the media stating he believes that 1916 M101-4 SGC 10 RUTH is “either an al-Qaeda affiliate organization and/or British boy band that represents a credible threat against the United States”.

Fantastic pick ups and a great representation to by the card, not the holder.

Thanks, Stown and Maurice. I have long given up trying to share card-related joy with the wife and buddies who don't collect, lol.

A buddy just told me the Ruth is on the front of Legendary's website-- definitely a thrill!
