How does Ebay know how much your invoiced shipping charges are?

Does Ebay charge you the 10% final sales fee on your advertised shipping charges? Or does it wait until you have actually invoiced the buyer. Just curious how it works when a buyer buys multiple items and you discount the listed shipping fees. Thanks, Tom

Its charge when the paypal payment is submitted by the buyer, so they know the rate that way.

  • Check your detailed invoice. A friend of mine and I discussed this the other day. His shipping fees are 2.79 for 1st card, 50 cents for each card after. I think he capped the shipping charge but not sure. Anyhow for quite some time, if he sold multiple different cards to the same buyer ebay was dinging him as if he was charging 2.79 for each card. When he called ebay they took him through the process of changing his settings so that it wouldn't happen anymore. They were not willing to go back and issue him any credits.

That of course made me check my invoice as my shipping charges are similar to those. Turns out I was getting overcharged as well but in a different manner. If I sold 30 cards to someone they dinged me for fees for shipping charge of 2.99 for 1st card and 50 cents for every other card on the order. I cap my shipping charge at 3.99 no matter how many cards are purchased so I was getting charged a nickel too much on each card after the third card on multiple orders.

I called ebay but got nowhere with the first person I talked to as they just didn't get what I was talking about. I have to try call them again today.
  • I finally got my settings right so I don't get dinged like I mentioned in my last post. This page will help anyone who is wondering about this:

  • My attempt to further clarify:

My shipping charges are 2.99 for 1st card plus fifty cents per up to maximum of 3.99 in Canada, 4.99 to the US and 5.99 to everywhere else. What would happen when people would buy multiple cards is they would go to pay and the shipping charges calculated to 2.99 per card. Even though I would correct there shipping charges down to the lower maximum amount, ebay still was charging me fees on the 2.99 for EACH CARD.

I tried to change my settings and after my first attempt ebay now thought I was charging .50 for each additional card with no maximum shipping charge so I would now get dinged based on .50 per each additional card per order - down from 2.99 previously. Obviously this was still incorrect so now I managed to add a cap to my shipping charges of 5.99 (there does not seem to be a way for me to set the maximums based on Canada, US and Everywhere else but I am going to call back to see if it is possible).

Confusing? Yes. If you are a seller with similar shipping rules and my explanation doesn't make sense to you, best to call ebay and have them walk you through it.

    Hope this helps.

I combine shipping manually and looking at my account they only charged me for a prorated portion of the total shipping cost for each card.
  • Then unlike me you were smart enough to set up your account correctly.
