Just received the copper version of British Historical Medal #2185, Reopening of the Royal Exchange, 1844, 73mm.
Here's a comparison with the frosted silver version of the same medal.

The detailed engraving by W. Wyon is super on both however!

<< <i>I normal prefer coins in silver or gold (or electrum ) but that copper version looks exquisite! >>
Exact same thing I was thinking (and I mean EXACT!). Almost hurts me to say it, but the copper is simply the better of the two. Huh. Can't believe the aesthetic side of my brain trumped the mouth-breathing metal fiend side

You guys beat me to it. My first immediate reaction was "wow, never thought I'd say this but I prefer the copper."
I think it's because the face is more pronounced, and this is due to the shadows on the copper being much stronger. Everything jumps out a little more than its silver counterpart.

Agreed. The copper brings a certain depth and warmth to the medal while the silver appears somehow chilly and flat.
Amazing detail in that design! The engraver was obviously at the peak of his craft.
