There sure are a lotta gold offerings from the mint this year..

I'm in the market for a gold coin or two (okay, one ounce or two half-ounce coins) but darned if I know which one might be a winner. This would strictly be for a short term flip.

1. Gold First Spouses. We're getting spouses *crammed* down us this year with 18 different coins available between the two finishes and five, instead of four, different 2013 spouses featured. I know the 2012 coins are "last year's" product but they came out so late in 2012 and are all still available so I'm counting them here. 2012 spouse sales are still dismal, and on track for yet another year of possible key dates, especially with the proofs. The uncs will always have a lower mintage but I think I'd rather have a key proof date of this year, especially if any proofs come in under 3k in sales.

2. Buffalos. Already discussed ad-nausem. Part of me thinks I should be contrarian and go for the 2013 non-reverse strike proof, seeing how last year's very pricey proof buffalo was within a hair's of being the key date one ounce proof. (19,675 for 2012 vs.18,863 for 2008). 2008 was another year when the proof buffalo was also competing with other proof buffalo.

3. Proof Gold eagles. 2012 was a key date for most proof eagles by a longshot. Will the trend continue? (More importantly, will anyone really care? 2012 proof eagle's key date status is well known and yet are selling for barely above the mint's initial offering price.)

4. Unc Burnished $50 gold eagle. A bit of an unloved gold oddball. Too early to be included in much of a set, but last year's 2012 was a *very* low key date eagle, the lowest eagle, if I'm not mistaken, across all sizes and finishes in the programs history with barely over 6k sold. (6,118, though that's not final) These are selling for a healthy premium, at least the MS70 FS coins.

5. 5-Star Generals Commemorative gold. Another year, another potential recent low mintage set, though still nowhere near Jackie Robinison unc, the mintages *are* approaching the very much thriving Capital Visitor Center $5 unc gold mintages. The Star Spangled gold Unc $5 coin had the sales of 7,027, which were about 1,000 lower than the already-key date 2011 Army $5 gold unc coin. How low will the 5 Star Generals gold coin go?

Any other thoughts?

I see consumer demand being higher this year because of the spot price drop. Now, will the Mint produce more because of this? Who knows.....
