Home PCGS Set Registry Forum

What do you think about the bar code and #s on the slab, front or back, no difference?

PCGS is from time to time changing the look of the information that is housed in the slabs. I dont like the new holders with the bar code on the front . I can still live with this no problem. This was also done with the green holders. IMHO it makes it look to busy. I also think the cert #s should be put on the back, after all we only use it for registry sets and inventory.

I like a cleaner look. On special issues they have no problem making it look a little richer with gold foil etc. And I for one think it looks great. Like the "Central America Coins". It would also be nice if they dressed up the the paper and use something a little richer looking than construction paper. Black paper silver writing etc. We spend good money with the best grading service, why cant they make it just a little classier? I think the best service needs to also look the best.

I think its time for some more improvemnet PCGS looks the best in the industry,

Now dont jump all over me and think this is asking to much, I like high end coins, I would like the holder to compliment the coin a little more class.

just another though to improve the looks of our coins....

Vote,
Bar code and Cert #s on reverse.
Dont care either way.

I've been quietly screaming (!!) about this for a couple of months now too Matt. Who uses the bar code? No one I know, and those that do- what? They can't flip the slab over? The rest of us have to look at this in the meantime?

I hate the bar code on the front of the slab! I would gladly pay to reholder all my PCGS coins that have it if they would put it on the back where it belongs. Better yet remove it alltogether.image

I don't like it either. Put it back on the back where it belongs. Think about where do they put the bar code on products in the stores? It is always on the bottom or side of the box never on the front.

My vote is for the back. I agree -- too busy on the front.

Let's start a poll! It makes the front just to busy, plus it is ugly and has no purpose to nearly every end user of the product. That was the most depressing part about getting my last upgrade is the holder had to be "downgraded" in the process.

I suspect it was to save a few cents by only having to print on one side of the paper.

It's horrible looking... hopefully they'll see the light and move it to the back. And while they're at it, put the serial number back there too.

Sure you should buy the coin not the slab, but you've still got to look at both.

Now to elaborate, makes the front too busy. Already bad enough that we have to have a series number and coin number that are meaningless to most.

Bill has a good idea, on the top edge of holder.

It is my opinion that the change in the holder could signal a change in the criteria for grading by setting a marker for pre and post grading. Moving that damn barcode is just the excuse to justify the change. Bear

I wish that the cert# was on the back of the slab along with the barcode. image

I agree with you 100%, Matt. Both the barcode and cert. # should go on the back. It detracts and takes your attention away from the
coin IMHO. Much to "busy" on the front. I'd like the holders to have a little more class too. I would also pay to have all of my PCGS coins reholdered.

In my opinion, PCGS moved the bar code back to the front of the holder for ONE reason. M O N E Y !

You see, the insert label has to be printed for EACH coin. It is cheaper to have a set reverse label all the same and put ALL the variable information on the front of the label. (ie) Date, Denomination, Grade, Coin Number, AND Bar Code data. In the past couple of years, PCGS label had to be made individually for BOTH front and back. Now, only for front. Make sense?

How come it's always about the money?

  • Just from the few responses it seem we are all in agreement 100% we dont like the bar code or the cert# on the front of the holder. I think its time we let PCGS, their customers, we dont like their direction with "our slabs". After all we own them, they just service them....like I said earlier a little classier.......PCGS, Rick are you hearing this?

Put it on the reverse if needed at all.
Maybe Rick will let us know what it is used for ?

I vote with everyone else - the present label is too busy, and I would like to see the bar code and the series/cert numbers on the back. In view of the outcry on this topic, it would be nice to hear from someone at PCGS about this - even if it's to say "tough!"

PQpeace, I use the barcode for inventory, and presumably others do. It contains the PCGS coin number, grade, and serial number. So I scan it, my program looks up the coin number in the PCGS database that I purchased from them, and presto.

However, I am perfectly content to scan the reverse of the label. In fact, I repeatedly try to with these new ones. image

    Super..good info.
I think the reverse would be the best place for it.
