I don't believe it's AT.....but I also don't know that the TPGs would consider that toning market acceptable. The coin came out of a garage in Florida along with a ton of other proof sets and mint sets. The coins were wrapped in newspaper for a move by an elderly couple and once they moved they left quite a few boxes unpacked. When they passed their daughter took possession of the house contents and found the boxes with coins. She contacted a local dealer and the dealer bought the coins and then consigned some to me last year and some this year. Obviously PCGS and NGC would not know the story or care...they would make a judgement call based on the coins in hand but like I said...I have no concerns with them being NT.
This is one of those cases where folks are going to believe what they want regardless of the true nature of the toning....and I think there is nothing wrong with that as each of us has to decide for ourselves how to spend our money.

I've got several (a couple dozen) of these packed away and none of mine have any significant toning. My initial thought ofthe above example was that something fishy was up with it.... $200!!!! Wow!! The toning is indeed striking and the explanation makes perfect sense as to how this may have transpired.. Goes to show where ''jumping to conclusions' can take you.
I believe the history.... Humidity, perhaps even some sea air, newspaper, heat....those cardboard boxes, the inside packaging.... And ......

The bummer is although provenance may prove a coin to be NT if the same toning can be replicated via AT method(s) I can then see why the Services are shy with grading. The solid case made for this Ike, sadly also provides an argument as to why it shouldn't/wouldn't grade with PCGS.

The problem is with colorful coins with colorful stories is everyone has one. While I believe KC, I don't ever recall a wildly toned coin that didn't come with a story that tries to bridge the gap of intent to prove NT.
Origin doesn't really matter if your goal is TPG acceptance. It is about the look and consistency and who's table it falls on. Again it's about the look, not the intent or process that led to toning. All of that said I do not see that in pcgs plastic in the near future.
I've never seen a brown box Ike tone like that... Wondering if you laid one atop a lampshade for a few months if you couldn't just make your own on the cheap

Sounds good to me. After only a year in Florida, I have seen some of the strange things Florida will do to coins. Don't even try to keep nice copper...
<< <i>... perhaps I am missing something, but isn't the coin still sonicly-sealed in its original government housing making artifical toning impossible? >>
I don't think the seal is quite strong enough to prevent heat/air/humidity inside given the amount of time those have been entombed. You can crack those cases if you look at them hard enough.

I think the plastic would melt don't you?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Artificial Toning is NOT impossible with these and no, they were not "sonically" sealed. Some type of an adhesive was used.

A glass vial of 'Stink bomb' from a magic shop placed in a small wooden box can achieve that look with Ike's and some pre 1964 nickels. Been there and done that years ago. Dip the coins first with ez zest and 15 minutes later. A quick dip will return to normal.
That Ike looks like the person who was listing 100's of toned coins on ebay a few years back. They all looked the same.

For the ASEs, I'm pretty sure a few people have MA toning down given the volume that we're seeing. That being said, they still look nice
