Are there any good Basketball Rookies from the years 1989-1996?

I am sure there are, but I do not know basketball well and I have a ton of base card rookies from those years and I don't know who I am looking at. If anyone has a good idea of who to look for in any of the sets, it would be appreciated.

Thanks

I think the best are the following 4 from 89-96

Shaq 1992- best ones are stadium club beam team, Hoops redemption, Topps gold and one of the upper deck but always forget which is better A or B
    Garnet 1995 - topps Finest
    Iverson 1996 - topps chrome
    Kobe 1996 - topps chrome

    Gary Payton.
  • 1990 Hoops has Payton who just got elected to the HOF. Also Tim Hardaway who might make the HOF.

Drazen Petrovic is in the HOF -- IIRC he's 1990 Skybox and Hoops.

Shawn Kemp for 1990 Fleer is a nice card.

How could I forget the 89 hoops David Robeson sp to only 100,000,000. But still an iconic card. This sounds like I'm being facetious but I'm not

That card was like the basketball counterpart to the UD Griffey.
  • The Robinson card was indeed hot as hell. He did pan out so we definitely have to include his
    89 Hoops in this list.

Even his 1990 second-year cards have demand in PSA 10.

  • There are tons of great rookies in that time span but unfortunately that is smack in the middle over basketballs overproduced/junk years.

Some that are still nice to have in psa10 would be:

    1989-90:
    Hoops David Robinson
    Fleer Mitch Richmons

    1992-93:
    Stadium beam team shaq
Upper deck 1a shaq #1 draft pick
    Hoops Magic All Rookie Shaq

    1993-94
    Finest Refractor Penny and Webber

    1994-95
    Finest Refractor Kidd and hill

    1995-96
    Finest Garnett

    1996-97
Topps chrome/refractor Kobe, iverson, Nash, Allen

    1997-98 chrome Duncan

    All those names look familiar!

Are these players everyone mentioned worth having graded provided they are 10's? (sans the bigger names like Shaq, Kobe, Dwayne Wade and Garnett)
  • Besides the 1996 Bowman Chrome which seems to be around 800 friggin dollars a box, would ya'll say the 1996 Bowman's Best would be the next best box to get for 1990's rookies ? Or any other input on the best box to buy for 1990's rookies ?

Lots of great players but probably none of them are worth grading... even if guaranteed a 10!

I prefer the 1992 Shaquille rookies either 92 UD or Stadium club second series.

  • Yep, ok, Would agree. Shaq is 90's Basketball. Kobe a distant 2nd. The 92 stuff though is so plentiful. (without knowing if the 96 stuff is as plentiful and we're all just fools)

The regular 1992 rookies may be plentiful, but the shorter printed rookie inserts are limited enough to be worth chasing in packs and in psa 10. And unopened series 2 boxes will dry up soon enough. Unopened cases are already impossible to come by.

I always liked the 96-97 metal and skybox premium sets, but I think anything from 96-97 would be a fun rip with that crazy rookie class.

I was just looking at 1989 Hoops #138 Robinsons in PSA 10 the other day on ebay. Still a $70-80, $100 card in PSA 10.

That was a monster card in 1990. I think the highest it booked was $35-40.

Does anyone remember the 89 Spurs Police Diamond Shamrock Robinson rookie? It was a tall card, black bordered. Pretty hot in the day.

Anyone buying Danny Ferry rookies now? LOL. Between Larry Johnsons rookie, Mutombo's upper deck rookie and Ferry, that was about $20 worth of cards at their peak.

The Shaq Beam Team was crazy in 93, 94. I think those peaked at $250 or $325. Its kind of a shame Kemp and Payton didn't have more valuable rookies (from a limited edition subset in 90 or 91).

Being from Michigan and therefore the Pistons being the home team, I have to mention Ben Wallace from 1996 might be worth adding to this list.
  • 1992-93 boxes can still be had on the cheap and are a blast to rip. I have cracked a few series 2 Stadium and the Beam Team is always awesome to pull. IMO its the nicest looking insert of the 90s.

Upper Deck Hi Series are a cheap rip but that Shaq #1 DP (SP) is actually a tough pull. I ripped 2 boxes in the last year and no shaq. Hoops series 2 has the Magics all rookie with very tough odds and all these are around 25-40 bucks.

1993-94 Finest are about $125 and fun but return just isn't there unless you score the Penny Refractor or an MJ refractor.

1995-96 Finest will cost you but Garnett is nice in PSA 10 and there are some nice inserts in there.

1996-97 get crazy. The Bowman's best is the most affordable, has great inserts and a nice Kobe RC (third best) but will be around $200. A blast to rip and a PSA 10 kobe is about $100. Chrome gets silly but that Kobe PSA 10 gets you your money back and the Kobe refractor is mucho loot. Finest series 1 that year is also expensive but great. Skybox EX is a big one for the inserts but not worth the asking price.
  • For the 92 UD Shaq are there not some Italian and other country variations? I've seen them here and there but never really followed what they are all about.
  • There is an Italian, Spanish and French version of the UD High Series cards. I believe the main RC is a bordered version of the triple exposure card. Most desirable is still the pack inserted 1a.

...and Shaq's Topps Gold card is also a tougher pull in addition to being condition sensitive due to centering and corner nicks caused by the tight cellophane packaging.

also, the 1992 Ultra Series 2 has 3 different Shaq rookies to pull (the regular card, the All-Rookie insert and the Rejectors insert), making that a worthwhile rip as well.
