AUTH or PSA 1

Since this was mentioned, I though an exercise was in order...

Which would you prefer for your collection and which would you pay more to own:

AUTHENTIC:

PSA 1:

No idea how the market prices this situation but it is not even close for me.

I will take the Auth Trimmed one all day over the beater.

This one is a slam dunk and I agree with the others here.

  • As long as a card is not a fake the grade it receives means nothing to me. Have no problem with "authentic" being on the flip.
  • im in the minority, i like my cards to be as real as they were made. A PSA 1 says its beat but its real and not altered. AUTH says it used to be real but someone tampered with it....give me the PSA 1 image
  • I like my cards as authentic as possible even if it means it looks thoroughly used and handled. I would take the PSA 1 over an authentic any day, as long as it is not too trashed.
I collect vintage PSA graded SF Giants, Willie Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal and Perry. And modern players like Buster Posey, Will Clark and Barry Bonds.

Ironically, there's probably more of the original card left with the trimmed card than with the PSA 1.

Assuming the top card in your picture is real and only trimmed, I would take the AUTH trimmed 100 percent of the time when given the choice between the two you pictured. Just crack it out and resubmit it 75 times until it gets a number grade image

I voted PSA 1 as I am in the authentic & unaltered camp.

That said, I would have been interested to see a better condition PSA 1 for the survey. For example a tear, pinhole, or just a few major creases instead of a true beater.

PSA 1. I don't have any interest in altered cards

If someone offered me either. I'd go with the trimmed one.

Edite to add: The PSa 1 does show a ton of character. I have a 52 Snider, not quite as bad but showing lots of love.

I'm not sure this is a fair comparison. Put that PSA 1 in a holder that says Authentic and ask which Authentic card you would prefer. That beater would never be chosen. A fair question would be do you prefer the PSA 1 in that holder or an Authentic holder. BTW even that beatere in the PSA 1 holder got some votes.

For me, the correct answer is neither. But if I was forced to take 1 or the other, I guess it would be
the PSA1. Anything thats been altered will head strait to the trash can. My$.02

I guess I would take the PSA 1. The Authentic looks nice, but the PSA 1 just seems "real" not altered. JMHO

Like many others I would take the PSA 1 unless the trimmed card was altered back in the day by the kid who owned it. I have a lot of 1950s Japanese menko that were hacked up by the original owners and each are unique and a piece of history. Not sure this 1952 has that same story.
  • I personally would be happy with either. But I would probably choose the "Authenticated" version, just by appearance alone.

Exactly. The comments from the other thread were taken out of context by the OP of this thread. It's not that all PSA 1's are more desirable than all PSA Authentic cards. It's that the same card is seen as more desirable in a PSA 1 holder rather than a PSA Authentic holder.

I would take the PSA 1. I use to collect W-series cards. Anything graded is always worth more than a card that can not be graded.

The Auth Mantle looks nice, but is only gradable be the odd ball companies.

Nothing was taken out of context...

This was simply done as an exercise to demonstrate that some will state one thing categorically and then change their mind when presented with the same question. The variables of TPG cards are not always as simple as they seem, and I understand that all PSA 1's and PSA AUTH are representative of the exemplars that I presented, but I think the stark difference puts some in a quandary,

If you don't like "taken out of context" then how about "misinterpreted" or "twisted"? All of them fit.

Nobody changed their mind. It's not even close to being the same question. In the other thread, what was stated categorically was that the Nolan Ryan card being submitted would be more desirable if it came back graded PSA 1 as opposed to PSA Authentic. This holds true for any card being submitted. A numerical grade is a more desirable result.

You're usually a pretty sharp guy; I shouldn't need to explain this to you twice.
