The power of 8.5??

For those coin guys out there, I notice a tremendous similarity to 8.5 graded cards as I do to AU58 graded coins (called "sliders"), since they are both just a touch away from being new.
Do card guys place the same value on 8.5-graded cards when the difference between 8 and 9 is huge - and/or the population??
