German States NEWP

Just got this one in the mail today. 1675 CP Magdeburg 2/3 Taler (KM 321 version). A fairly scarce coin, this one slabbed AU58. Although adjustment marks are visible on the obverse they really are reasonably light for the time, very good luster for being 338 years old.

Founded by Charlemagne in 805 it was a free city of the Holy Roman Empire and became a Duchy in 1680.

Magdeburg only minted city coinage until 1682, it was taken over by Brandenburg Prussia in 1680 and became a mint for them beginning in 1682.

Magdeburg produced some very elusive sede vacante and bistum issues that are near impossible to find. I see them once in a blue moon in European catalogs and auctions. One day I will reel one in....
