I forgot about this thread. There was another where I offered $10,000 for the first MS68. Either way I did not think PCGS would ever grade one higher than MS66...I was wrong!
I paid about what the PCGS price guide lists as the price for this coin. I don't know that it was a great investment but it completed the set.
As for the PL designation, PCGS does not give that out for these coins. As for the coins being MS66+ quality just wait and see. I have been more than disappointed on quite a few occasions when grading 1981 S SBA$'s. They tend to hide the scrape marks (that Supercoin referred to) very well, but PCGS tends to notice them.
I have had several coins that I thought were MS66 come back as MS63. To be honest even the MS67 that I own has several well hidden marks and I am surprised that PCGS gave it a MS67 grade. Not that it isn't a great looking coin, but with the right lighting and at the right angle it has some fairly distracting imperfections.
Lincolnsrule: Thanks, it has been fun searching these coins and collecting the best for 10 years now.

No. This coin is clean with no scrape whatsoever. It has some tiny ticks that almost require a loupe to see and is very attractive. It does, unfortunately, have a tiny little GOUGE in a bad place (head). The mark is small enough that it might be "overlooked". It is easily the best I've seen in over 5,000 sets.
Cladking; Don't get me wrong, I wish you the best of luck and maybe it will be the 2nd MS67. It is just that it is very tough to find MS66 1981 S SBA's, let alone MS67.

Great! This one will need all the luck it can get or it might end up in an MS-65 holder.
