What's your least Favorite Mickey Mantle Regular Issued Base Card 51-69

I would have to go with his 1966 release. Never liked this photo whatsoever. His 67 release follows closely in 2nd place imo.

My thoughts exactly. I really don't appreciate the head-shots.
Topps showed ZERO creativity with those two cards. I cannot
believe that they didn't have something better in their files.

I give the nod to 1967 as the worst.

My favorites are 1957 and 1968. 1957 as probably the best picture
and 1968 from my favorite set.
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the PSA 10 collector he didn't exist.

They are all pretty cool, but I'd say 1968, as I simply don't like the card design, and the pose had been repeated ad nauseum.

Oddly enough, I just don't get the appeal of the '56 Topps. I like the background leaping image, but the portrait just doesn't look like Mantle to me, and his big smile and red lips look clown-ish to me (just my opinion, of course, as I know some love that card). It's weird, I know.
  • Least favorite would have to be 1967 because it is a giant headshot and is so unoriginal.
I collect vintage PSA graded SF Giants, Willie Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal and Perry. And modern players like Buster Posey, Will Clark and Barry Bonds.

This is what I really find interesting about cards as it's so subjective. 1968 is my favorite set and probably your least favorite.

I don't think there's one Topps set that appeals to most Topps collectors. Many would say that 1967 or 1971
are the best looking, others would say those are among their least favorite sets.

I feel exactly the same way.

I would probably list the '58 Topps as my least, just due to the inherently blah nature of the set.

    Probably 1967, but I don't like the 1956 either.

Most of his cards are really that thrilling. My favorite of 1960's is the 1965. My favorite of the 50's would be the 1957. By just eye appeal I would rank them like this:

    1965
    1963
    1960
    1957
    1953 topps and bowman
    1951
    1952 topps and bowman
    1958
    1954
    1956
    1959
    all the rest.
Work hard and you will succeed!!

Come to think of it, the majority of his cards are head shots and they are all boring---56 grinning idiot, 67 hungover in the dugout, 61 dozing off, etc. I can leave with the static batting stances. It might be easier to pick your favorite, less to choose from.

For me 1967 is the worst, and the 1961 MVP comes in 2nd. I actually like the 1966 card.

Good topic. Mantle's cards (regardless of image/issue/pose) are usually held in un-touchable status. I'm not a big fan of 1959 or 1960.
    Currently collecting PSA graded:

    1991 & 1992 Fleer Pro Visions
    1952 Topps
  • Where there is idolatry there tends to be a lack of reason and balance.

Many of his Topps cards are just awful, and Topps was just mailing it in.

    'Nuff said.

By far, my favorite is the 53 Bowman. First card with Kodachrome technology was way ahead of its time. You can really see/feel the texture of those uniforms, bats, baseballs, etc. It's probably his best action shot too LOL After that, my favorites are 66, 68, 64, and 52 Bowman.

    1967 - mugshot
1961 - rouge cheeks and lipstick - bizarre
    1956 - doesn't look like him
1969 - Mick looks old and colors not flattering

Kiss me once, shame on you.

1967 should be everyone's least fave. Unattractively posed mugshot.

At least they didn't shamelessly re-up pics like they did for Mays and Aaron!

Regardless, I still like every Mantle in my collection, even the ugly ones. image
