How did this get to be an 8?

On the back with all of this chipping, how does this qualify for an 8?

  • My guess would be that 1973 is common with those edges, so it might be a little more lenient in that year. Also it looks well centered which might boost it from a 7 or 7.5 to an 8.

I am sure someone with more experience in this year might chime with something more accurate.

centering. rough cuts tend to be popular with the graders at times, but the bidders will decide what it's worth.

my guess, somewhat less than a reasonably well-centered sharp example in the same grade with no rough cut and crisp, black back edges.

I've seen far worse... Back chipping on that issue, especially given the rough cut, is not uncommon and obviously, the grader treated it with indifference. The card appears to be legitimate in the holder despite the feelings of some to the contrary.

Because they knew the right people.
  • My concern is too much chipping for an 8. The rest of this looks good for an 8

Funny you should say this. I have been browsing their website for days and have noticed many cards that don't seem to fit the guideline of a PSA 10. However, I am new to this grading thing, but my eyes have over 30 years experience looking over cards.
Been collecting on and off from 1982. Football is my favorite, although, I do like baseball. Always looking for 1984 Topps and 1989 Score Football PSA 10's.

I agree the card seems to have a little more chipping than the normal. Maybe the grader likes the '73 set or Mike Schmidt.
