Is this Indian Head Cent a Snow variety ?

dcarrdcarr Posts: 9,068 ✭✭✭✭✭
I know Morgan Dollars with die breaks are collected as "VAM" varieties.
Are Indian Head Cents with die breaks considered to be Snow varieties ?
I just came across this 1880 with a die break along hair curl:

it doesn't answer your inquiry directly but there are snow varieties that are not ddo/ddr/rpd/mpd etc. some have gouges, breaks, clashes and other things.

It does not appear to be a listed variety based on the Eagle Eye wiki page here, but that doesn't mean it can't be added and listed as a new discovery. I'd send Rick Snow a PM here and see if he's interested in adding the variety to his files.

There's some deterioration in front of date, under neck & date and on nose as well

Also above ear and 2nd feather, looks like a really late die state, kinda cool with that raised tatoo look at the hair curl

    Nice discovery! Thanks for sharing.

What I love about it is it's very well struck despite the crumbling die, might not find another like it

    Thanks for the replies.
The shallow area near the rim to the left of the date is a strike-through (grease or similar).

There is another thin elongated strike-through across the left part of the ear.

This is a Snow-8, The Earring variety. It is a 2-star variety, which means a 2X - 3X premium. Looks like finest known.

Rick, in your book, discussing 1880 Indian Cents, it only goes to an S-6.
Do you have an addendum page available for added variety numbers?

Looks like a MPC (misplaced curl).

If your book goes to S-6 in 1880, time to buy the latest edition. image

The Wiki page I linked above only goes to S-6 as well. Maybe time to update the website. image

The Attribution Guide is now mostly out of print (Vol. 1 1856-1858 and Vol. 2 1859-1869 have a few copies remaining). The iPad version is always available and has the latest updates. A full 700-page hardcover edition in color is planned, maybe next year.

Thanks for pointing out the need to update the wiki site. I'll get on it.
