Raw Mantles Auction on Ebay

There are five raw Mantles (53,53 bowman,55 bowman,59 and 61 Topps) A 60 Maris, 54 Banks, and a 54 Robinson up for auction on Ebay. The seller is the ghs-group. They have 100% feedback but all on small purchases. I love raw cards and the 53 Bowman,61 mantle and even the 53 look great. There already is quite a bit of interest/bids on all the cards so it will be interesting to see how high these raw cards sell for. The reason for the post is i would like some you thought and opinions on these raw cards. There's many years experience on this board and as a new member I value that. Thanks in Advance

Run away as fast as you can...

Like my momma always said...If it seems too good to be true, then it is.

Ask yourself the following question: "Why wouldn't they bother grading these cards before auctioning them"?

Considering the premium these cards get graded in ANY condition, I fail to understand why one would not grade them. That's what gives me pause.

Any high dollar, easy to fabricate or alter card, should be graded IMO. It's too easy to trim or touch up and that won't necessarily show up in a scan.

I do know an unrelated auction that ended this weekend that would be very easy to fake, left as much as $500-800 on the table(IMO) by not being graded. So I assume it was in fact fake as the hammer price was in the $300's.
  • If a card's worth over $75 and it's not graded -- I pass.

    No exceptions.

    Edited to add:

I'll buy a raw card if I can see it in person AND have time to inspect thoroughly
and closely -- but not on the Internet.

I agree with everyone here. The 53B and 61T Mantles look mint, or too good. The Banks rookie and 54T Robinson look short to me.
  • I would NEVER buy one thats not PSA or the least SCG....I dont trust and other graders and certainly don't trust sellers of high end raw cards...I got burnt on a lot of t-206 that all came back as 'tampered'

over the past couple years i've had some moderate success picking up decent raw Mantle cards from eBay and getting them graded accordingly.

the power of psychology is an intersting testament to the ways of the bay.

read above posts. i'm certain that somehow part of my success was exactly because other potential bidders were shooed away by inherent fears of tampering, etc.

so it works both ways. no Mantle card is above suspicion, it seems. careful out there folks.

Thanks for all the reply's. Those Mantles are tempting. but I think I will observe this one from the sidelines. I too have bought a few raw 50's and 60's raw stars from certain sellers with good results from PSA but this one raised some flags. The seller gives 14 days for returns but that obviously isn't enough time for grading. Maybe I'll ask the seller for a 2 month guarantee and take a few of those to the National in Chicago..................nah!

  • The risk is not enormous. If the card has flaws not mentioned, you should be able to detect them before you send them for grading. It all depends on how much you pay.
  • That 53 Bowman is incredible.

WTH would a seller not get that graded? Are they crazy?

    I cannot believe that.

The 1960 Maris is a BVG 8 crackout. Take a look at his 'feedback as a buyer'. He also has a lot of feedback selling graded cards. If you want to take a chance, ship them off to PSA asap under rush service and ask for a refund if they are rejected.
