2x2 holders, staples, and scratches

how many coins have been ruined by staple scratches from people removing them from 2x2's? i know it's impossible to answer, but...
have you ever done it? are you careless when removing them or overly cautious?
post a coin with an obvious staple scratch.

I've received several old coins that had staple scratches and other signs of more recent handling, but paid commensurate prices for a net grade.
I'll look for pictures of examples. I do agree that many a perfect modern coin would be "ruined" down to face value by even the slightest staple skitch

<< <i>You guys probably know this but I'll say it anyway. Don't mess with the staples work the coin over to allow a small space in the plastic then pop a small pin hole. Then the coin can be pushed up through the plastic as it will easily rip open from the pressure of pushing the coin up through it. >>
Agree. A toothpick is perfect for punching a hole in the plastic. Bend the 2X2 and the plastic will easily tear and the coin will just fall out.

whoa that sucks! are we positive it was a staple scratch? It looks kind of wide and deep for a staple scratch, most of the ones I've seen are light hairlines. That look like someone used a screwdriver or other tool to open a TPG slab and the tool slipped and gouged, furrowed, plowed the field. must have been a real "oh chit" moment

I LOVE these things! Course I work in a law office so I'm around staples all day long. After getting tired of trying to staple a half dozen papers with a regular cheap swingline or other style stapler, I threw them ALL in the trash and threatened to fire anyone that brought another one in. I use only the Max flat stapler now for anything under 20 pages it never lets me down. Having one at home to use on coin flips is just a bonus.

Lifting a 2x2 from a box literally "stuffed" with other coins in 2x2 almost guarantees a scratch. Especially from browsers at a coin show.
Staples should be installed with a clinch stapler and even then compre4ssed down further to minimize the possibilities.
Ideally, in addition to the 2x2, the coins should then be stuffed into a flip. That way there's no possibility of an inadvertent scratch due to handling.

Just imagine if previous handlers imagined a hundred or so years earlier, what could have been, if they would have imagined.
