? For Dealers/Collectors: Sealed Envelope Mint Sets

This is a open question to any and all members regarding sealed envelope mint sets.

Several years ago, I purchased 25 sealed 1968 mint sets from a dealer friend. It was part of a larger collection he had bought out and as I was looking for the elusive 1968-D FS Jefferson, I opened 7 of them before relagating the rest to my closet, unopened.

Two weeks ago, I listed the 18 individually with a start price of $7. No bids on any of them but I did get a request for a BIN for all 18. My response was to let them ride out the process as there were 'watchers' on all. I did offer a 10% discount and free shipping if he were to place a $9 or $10 bid on each set and win the four other items he did have bids in on. He didn't do this or respond to my suggestion because he was out of town for Mothers Day. So I re-listed them all as one listing. Same guy won them.

During this second weeks listing, I visited my dealer friend and I helped him open some early '70's sealed mint sets. After going thru 3 of them, it dawned on me that there was a difference with them compared to the 7 1968's I had opened. The two pieces of cardboard in his separated the plastic with the coins...my 1968's had the cardboard on the outside of the plastic, like a sandwich. As I said, I had gotten them from him so he asked to see one of the others. Next day, I took 6 to him (and 1 I had previously opened) and he agreed that indeed, the cardboard kept him from 'feeling' the plastic with the coins thru the envelope. He suggested 2 possibilities...1---the mint did this (accident or on purpose?) or 2---they had been opened and re-sealed somehow before he got them. And he could not ever remember having any mint sets packaged this way.

So I wrote the high bidder a letter outlining all this new info letting him have the option to refuse the buy or continue with the purchase. His answer aside (not yet known to me), my question to you is has anyone else had this happen to them? Anyone know what really might of happened here?

Thanks for any posts!

The usual mint pack has the two coin sleeves adjacent to each other, with the cardboards on the outsides.

Those sets with cardboard separating the coin sleeves have been previously handled.

If the mint sets weren't in a sealed box or if the were mot individual sets with some one's name and address on the envelope they were previously opened and some one sealed the envelopes after looking at the coins so that they knew they had already looked at them,

I have never understood what the deal is about unopened sets. I don't have any use for coins I can't see well enough to have an opinion on.

For one thing I want to see the coins and don't deal with sets where I can not see the coins or get an idea as to how they grade, are they damaged (pvc, etc.). People always think they are going to get some free ride somewhere but I guarantee any seller who is experienced in the business is not going to sell unopened anything. It may be opened and resealed lol........

The sets in pliofilm come with pvc so those coins should be removed from those as soon as possible (like 63 and 64 pf sets). I see ebay sellers hawking coins in the original govt pkg - you can't tell what shape the coin is in. If it is nice why is it still in that pvc film?

I recently bought some 68-70 pf sets. I cracked out all the coins from the govt packagong, dipped the 40% silver halves for submission to a TPG or to my self slab BCW holders (coins nice but not worth the subm fee). The rest of them went into 2x2's for the junk box or giveaway to kids.

Thank you for this answer and I appreciate your response. However, djm post seems to indicate otherwise.
All 25 sets were sold to me as individual sealed envelopes...how the dealer received them, I do not know nor does he
remember thus the provenance is unknown. Hopefully more people will weigh in on this.

Although I can appreciate your opinion Cougar, your response does nothing for my OP question.
