Dino-Lite is a manufacture of hand held Digital Microscopes, they can be connected to a computer through a USB port. The proprietary software DinoCapture 2.0 (Windows), DinoXcope (Mac OS) works on the following operating systems Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard), Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leop), Mac OS 10.7 (Lion), Mac OS 10.8 (Mtn Lion)
They can be used to capture decent images or video of the whole coin or whole slab, however this is not what they were designed for, they are designed for micro photography and micro video.
I use the model below, AM3011 attached to my Samsung ATIV tablet and walk the coin show floor looking in dealers cases. At the last show Timonium MD, I found an over date on a seated half while the case was still locked with the coin inside.....

Yup, that's what I meant...almost forgot there was more than one...it really isn't that much money.

How would someone wanting only a home setup decide on the model Dino-Lite and stand? Is the most expensive model really any better for coin pictures? I could afford it, but I hate to waste money.

This is the stand I think you are referring to
<< <i>So, all I would need to do is buy myself a laptop, a Dino-Lite, and a rigid stand. Then, I carry all this throughout the coin show bourse and auction lot viewing area. Looks to me like I would need a rolling luggage piece, and then, all the table dealers want to know what I have to sell.

Mozin at home/work my Dino is attached to my desktop computer, with my stand pictured above. When I go to a show/auction I take my tablet its like an IPAD only its the windows version and use the same Dino, without the stand. It could be done with a Laptop instead of a tablet, but I think it would be more trouble than its worth. Tablet weighs less than 2 pounds and is very easy to handle with one hand while the other hand operates the Dino.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm thinking your a MAC person? The Dino's will work on Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard), Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leop), Mac OS 10.7 (Lion), Mac OS 10.8 (Mtn Lion) I'm not 100% sure but I think the IPAD has a different operating system and IPAD does not have a USB port.
