PSA 10 Tim Raines 81 topps rookie $251.
Any thoughts appreciated.

For $15 a month you get access to prices on most item for over 4 years.
PSA 9 Bench: Average Price: $974.33, that is for the lat 12 months of sales, although the last 3 were...$1,885.00, $1,000.00, $1,100.00
PSA 10 Raines: Average Price: $280.41...$249.50, $279.99, $255.00
Be careful buying from 4sc, some claim that their grades may be a little generous given their volume. The prevailing sentiment is "buy the card, not the holder". If you are near the average price and you have a superior card then you have done very well, if it is a "slider" looking grade, then you have probably overpaid at the average. A good way to get true thoughts on the cards would be to post the pics here with the grade and cert #'s obscured and ask the boards what they think that the grade is. It may be brutal, but at least you'll get an honest answer as to what it looks like.
But if that was the case, you wouldn't have paid that much. So it is extremely doubtful you overpaid. Almost certainly you got a good deal
<< <i>You only overpaid if the value you get from owning those cards is less than $1390

I'm sure the OP was asking if he overpaid relative to the market price. What you're talking about is consumer surplus, and that isn't something he would need to ask the boards about.
<< <i>Don't listen to those who suggest that certain submitters get preferential treatment ... that notion is unfounded and is just meant to cause trouble.

There is evidence to suggest that 4SC gets lenient grades.
I have a PSA 9 with a bent corner I got from them last year.
I've heard others on this board say the same.
My advice, examine your card when it arrives. If you're happy with it, then all the best !
The one thing that I've learned over the years is that you will rarely go wrong if you buy quality over quantity and do your research. I made the mistake many times of buying for the sake of buying and it took years to learn the difference. Now, while I still make some impulse purchases, I tend to focus on the best of the best (to the point that my discretionary funds will allow) and resolve to pony up when there is limited data and the item is just too difficult to value. It has proven a wise modus operandi and in the cases where I've thought I overspent, I've found that there are others that are still interested at higher levels. You can rarely duplicate quality.
<< <i>Overpaying is a relative term. If you are happy with the condition of the cards, they fill a need and you are satisfied with the price you paid, then you did fine. You can usually find something cheaper, but sometimes you sacrifice quality and, in the end, personal satisfaction. Buy the card independent of the grade and you'll be happy regardless.

I totally agree, but to be honest, I've never overpaid. I buy what i can afford and what i want.
The Bench rookie is one fantastic card! I have always wanted one, a "9" is awesome.
The Raines in a "10" is also a great card, he deserves to be in the HOF.
I will bet in a couple of years you will be happy as can be that you pulled the trigger.
Joe
you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet
I recently paid considerably over for hi quality cards. If u can get a hi qulaity cards for the card at vcp consider ita good deal.
I recently also bought a psa 10 rains RC from 4SC and it looks fine.
I have gotten some duds from them and shake my head ...but also some true screaming blazers.
