Cleaned? Your opinions greatly appreciated ... (photo)

Do you think this has been cleaned? It's a rarer type so I'm wishing "no" but ...

    Cleaned. Little doubt about it.

Crud. I knew it but I didn't want to believe it. I've been searching for this for a while. I was hoping the lines were some kind of crazy die polishing marks image oh well thanks for confirming what I feared to be true image

Its definitely been rubbed by something back and forth a lot.....cleaning for sure. However, its still a nice coin. I would not pay through the nose for it, but melt value is well worth it. You can keep hunting for a pristine one, but this is nice to fill the collection until you do.

What is the difference between a coin being heavily circulated and one that has all these rub marks, lines and scratches on it from cleaning? Is circulated better than a cleaned coin? How about putting the cleaned coin back in circulation to get other marks, thus making it seem like it was just circulated?

Then there is acid dipping. I assume one can tell if the original luster of a coin is gone due to acid bathing.

With die-polishing marks they are often completely parallel... a coin like the one you posted, with light cleaning, still has a quite a bit of value, just less than a pristine/original example.
