Vintage Topps, Bowman, Goudey sales figures found

I recently found a 1965 Federal Trade Commission document detailing anti-trust allegations against Topps.

The FTC findings included baseball card sales figures for Topps (1952-61), Bowman (1951-54), Goudey (1933-42), Fleer (1959-63) and Leaf (1960).

There's also lots of other interesting and fun revelations and details for vintage card collectors.

I'm running a summary on my blog, linked below.

I posted the Topps sales figures on May 12. The Bowman will go up tomorrow, the Goudey on the 18th and Fleer/Leaf on the 21st.

It's fun to think that the next time a PSA 10 1952 Topps Mantle is sold, it may well bring in more money than Topps made on ALL of its baseball card sales in 1952.

    Very cool post, Bob.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

The wholesale cost for wax box cases from 1962 to 1966 was $17.28 each.
A case was 24 boxes containing 24 nickel packs, $28.80 retail.
Earlier wholesale pricing should be available when others chime in.
Also just found 1951 Topps Hocus Focus with the same 24-24-5 $28.80 retail also priced at $17.28.
So it's probably safe to assume that nickel packs from 1952 to 1962 would be priced the same way.

Thanks. Those wholesale numbers should allow better mathematicians than I am to begin speculating on print quantities. Have at it!

    $800,000 @ $17.28 per case = 46296 cases.

    576 packs per case x 46296 cases = 26,666,496 packs

Sorry, can't go any further, I don't know how many cards were in each pack.
