where did all the PSA 10s come from?

Ive been collecting since 1978 and was a member of PSA in the early-mid 90's and submitted cards and would never see many 9s, NEVER saw any 10s. Now the same cards that were submitted back then are now coming back 9s & 10s !! I see MANY cards on eBay that are PSA 10s with chipping all along the card. When did PSA get so lax on grading???

Actually, in my experience, at least (have been submitting for about a decade now), PSA is a bit tougher on some aspects of grading, particularly centering. There are always going to be exceptions to the rule, but I don't find that cards graded many years ago are significanty more conservatively graded.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

I do have to say, the cards I've seen in the holders with typewriter font aren't very impressive. Of course many are probably in private collections.

A few reasons. Grading was in it's infancy and new to collectors. People sending in cards probably didn't preview their cards very good before submitting. Grading being a new thing, I'm sure it wasn't grasped very well back then as well.

You see it all the time when new guys come here crying about unfair grades when in reality they have no idea what they are doing. I'm sure it was the same back then. No offense to any new peeps.

    This^

I know it has happened to everyone at one time or another!

Also, the power of the registry creates the demand for submission of thousands upon thousands of cards that people normally wouldn't grade (sadly, but can't say I haven't benefitted from it on multiple occasions image)

I think they've gotten real tough on refractors and cards with chrome type finishes.

There were quite a few 10s kicking around a decade plus ago. There are obviously more now because more cards are getting graded. In the late 90s/early 00s, many people weren't submitting anything outside the key HOF cards. Now people will submit almost anything if it's high end.

I'm still kicking myself for not buying two 1957 PSA 10 commons that were $200 each. They were at a SF show about 12-13 years ago.
