The Dmitri Young Collection

Not sure about how everyone else feels on this but I personally didnt like that PSA marked his collection specifically for him. One reason was for that he was a semi celebrity or at least during his playing days so his cards will no doubt get noticed more and will raise a premium when the same card in a regular Joe's holder (but still PSA 10) wont even match now what Dmitris would sell for and I believe it showed favortism on PSA's part. Indeed he had an impressive collection but them again, he could afford PSA 10's in almost every year/every brand. Why go and personalize his collection but not someone else's? I thought Matt Miller had killer cards when he was selling his collection for those who remember seeing them last year in the BST thread. I didnt see The Matt Miller Collection. Does anyone think the same?

he's not the only one. I've seen cards labeled "Charlie Sheen Collection" on the pop report. There were the Harris Collection pedigree T206's that became a red flag for many, and more recently a collection was pedigreed allegedly for a celebrity that didn't want to be named, as "The Mr. X Collection".
Steve Soloway also had a lot of cards labeled with his name a few years ago.
I think it's just a matter of talking to PSA and seeing if they'll do it.

I'm pretty sure they'll do that for anyone. I've bought a Tiger Woods SI for Kids that had some random collection on the flip. It wasn't even a first & last name, it was more like a screen name.

I bought a card from the Dmitri Young collection and had it reholdered to remove his name. I personally don't like tagged flips.

Whenever I see a card with a name on the flip, I usually pass on buying it. Why buy it, then have to reholder it etc, just seems like a lot of work. I usually just wait for the next item to pop up then I buy that one. It's cool that PSA offers this service for collectors that want to holder their cards and have their name on it and keep it in their collection for years but I wouldn't want to buy a 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson with the name "Mike Smith" under it. It just doesn't really appeal to me but then again I'm just one person image

And for me personally, I don't see any added value for a card just because someone like Charlie Scheen or Dimitri Young once owned it. I'm sure others think it's neat and some might pay more for something like that, but I don't feel a premium should apply for that. I wish I could find a link to the auction, but a few years ago on Ebay someone was selling a 1971 Topps set ungraded in a binder and stated that the cards once belonged to Scheen and the cards were in absolutely terrible shape I'd say VG-EX at best and was asking a huge price just because of the lineage. I'm wondering what the final outcome was for that auction. I don't think it's worth it, but what do I know image

It's still on Ebay two years later, and for the same ridiculous BIN price. So much for the theory that people will pay a premium for an item previously owned by a well known name.

I think its kinda cool that psa does this. When a collection reaches a legendary status like the Dimitri Young collection
its nice to have the whole collection done.

In Fb they did Jon Issacson's collection before he sold off. He had accumulated the finest FB RC's in the highest grade
possible and was the king of Fb cards. The envy of us all.

I managed to buy one card from his collection from the seller and didn't pay a premium. I kinda feel like I own Jane Russell's bra.

  • SGC must offer the same thing. A while back I bought some SGC 84 '63 Topps cards that were from "The Rothman Collection". I cracked them out and now they're sitting raw in my partial set.

No clue who Rothman is or was.

I like the historical aspect of it.

Imagine 100 years from now people talking about the Dmitri Young collection.

    That's just kind of cool.

I thought there was another thread that stated some of his re-sales have already exceeded the original SCP auction price. There was and continues to be a premium for having Dmitri Collection on the flip. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I agree, plus there is a story to be told about his cards if you own one, since he probably had the nicest rookie card collection on the planet.

That's why I bought one. It wasn't an expensive and now I have a story behind this card, which I wouldn't if it was just ordinary Bonds slab rookie.

So, if I cracked a 9 and it came back a 10, and sent it in for Pedigree think they'd put "Used to be a 9" on the flip for me?

I like that PSA (& SGC) offer the pedigreed service.
I collect them as well and have many ex ballplayers personally owned cards and think its neat that Dmitri Young was/is a collector too!

I like the pedigree option and would consider it if it wasn't so expensive. I like the idea of someone trying to reassemble the same collection I have now, 100 years from now. I always wonder where my T206 cards have been and always thought that those who collected unique backstamps had a pretty cool niche in the hobby. This offers the ability to stamp your cards without damaging them, just like a lot of older collectors did. I know when I'm gone, my collection will in all likelihood be sold off, but with the pedigree option it still allows it to live on, to one day come together again.
    I collect Cal Ripken cards, T206, E95, E210, R319.

I believe BGS was the first to offer this service publicly.

I like the Dmitri Young Coll. flips for most cards (ie my 1995 Vlad Guerrero Bowman's Best PSA 10), it was a pretty big deal and basically all the cards sold for premiums so others thought so too.

That said, I'll side with Ergo when it comes to big $ cards... say anything north of $1K I would rather not have the notation. For those the cards speak for themselves and I think the D.Young notation is a distraction, a footnote and pretty irrelevant to the presentation.
