Not a hugh deal but what if your coins are not lost??

How many of you have lost coins either in shipping or receiving in the mail? My new set in the registry has lost 4 coins in 3 shipments and where are they? Shipped with insurance, but they are just lost. How is this possible? It cant be just me my % rate would be 66% losses. How can your coins get lost?

I think they get stolen....

How many times are they written off as a lost? I have had this many in a short time surely it happens to you? Are your #s of lost coins equal or greater in #s. Tell me im not the only one.... did it or has it happened to you and do they still not show up after time????? Registered mail all is the only answer, 10.00 bucks a pop... Or have you never had this happen to you? It just seems odd this many times.....

I have shipped several hundred coins by US Mail. My observations...

    - 1 has not arrived. It was insured for $100, and required a signature for delivery. The PO verified it was not signed for, and (eventually) paid the claim.

    - A dozen or so have taken longer than they should--7-10 days for first class mail.

    - Several times the sellers says they have not arrived. When I offer a refund or replacement provided they sign the postal claim form, the coin amazingly arrives the next day. Not to say it couldn't happen that way, but I would suspect at least half these people were trying to scam me, but didn't want to have their signature on a gov't form that would be part of the crime.

I have also rec'd a lot of coins by mail.

-I have twice received coins that were in broken slabs, or in 1 case, the slab was gove from the envelope. In all cases, I viewed the packaing as insufficient (cardboard safety mailer inside a standard envelope).

So, I don't think your case is representative of what everyone goes through.

  • When I started I used those cardboard ez-mailers and a paper envelope. One coin got crushed but delivered, well the coin was fine, the slab got crushed. Fortunately the customer really was buying the coin, not the holder, and decided to keep the coin and the crushed holder. I now use bubble wrap envelopes. One check to me was lost completely, the only loss I've had. That was easy to fix. I only use Registered when sending to PCGS, I use 1'st class insured everywhere else if the value is less than $500.

Probably around 200 transactions in the last couple of years and have had one article stolen off the porch from the guy who bought it. It was insured, but underinsured (didn't realize that $50 or under didn't require a sig and only insured a $135 item for $50 thinking they would have to sign for it before it would be delivered....no way, the PO just left it on his porch!!image) PO paid the claim within 1 week of my taking them the broken open package, (luckily it was left on the porch) and I refunded the guys money. Yours sounds like terrible luck Bc. Or possibly someone is onto your coin recieving and sending and is intervening somehow. Maybe an inside job at the PO?? Are you where you can do your stuff at another PO?? Might have to start recieving things insured, registered, with a return reciept or something....what a pain....

Percent seems to high to be "random", I would say it is near your end. As for registered, we had a $3,000 registered package show up missing too. The Post Office called us and said it was missing, and then still made us wait 30 days to file a claim, and get the receiving party to acknowledge that they did not receive it (even though they knew exactly where it was last seen).

I would say most lost mail is not "lost"!

Out of all the packages I have shipped with the USPS only 1 has gotten lost. It was under $100 and the claim is being worked on now. I have noticed is it is shipped registered or certified it always gets there. I have shipped plenty of coins to PCGS and have never had any trouble.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

So far for me I had a big scare around 911 the biggest submission I ever sent was mailed back to me that day. It did show up after a month. But right now I have a package I am waiting for from the mint they said it shipped 04-09-02 and I still have not received it. It usually arrives in less than 5 days from their shipping date. I was told I have to wait 30 days until they will ship another.

3 years of E-Bay, 3 missing coins. 1 about 2 years ago where a gold piece was shipped to California and the envelope arrived worn in half and mangled, no coin. Insured, PO immediately paid claim. 2 right around the events of 9/11. 1 Buffalo nickel to upper New York, never arrived, I assume PO paid claim, buyer demanded to file it. 1 from Dallas to Ft Worth (30 minute drive) of 3 gold commems, PO paid claim.

  • I have sent 5 shipments to PCGS all by priority mail and one got "lost", lousy percentage. I am tempted to send everything by Fedex and absorb the higher cost.

  • I have had one package delievered that was completely empty. I filed a claim, however, the post office later found the coins. The package had busted open while going through a sorting machine and the slabs ended up on the floor somewhere. The coins were delievered a few days later completely intact.
  • Hi :
I've sent quite a few to Pcgs , ALWAYS registered insured. Usually return receipt requested. Two weeks ago I lost my first one. It got to Ca. ok . I'd rather have a street address to ship to than a PO box , but I think registered is a lot safer way to ship than priority insured.

I agree with previous posts, you've got something weird going on in your local post office or distribution center.

I estimate a bit under 1% of packages I sent are "lost". Insured or not doesn't seem to make any difference, and in fact I suspect insured might make for a more tempting target.

I've never had a Registered or Express mail lost.
  • I have to agree this has baffled me. Not many know I do coins that is why it bothers me. Coins i`ve sent and recevied all in a short period of time. They just dissappear even a few that were insured but the post office cant find them, something is wrong with that....
  • Well let's see 3 packages in the last month. I think that is more than I have lost in 3 years. Not to mention I had 2 packages NOT make it to me.

2 of the 3 lost recently...
one to a board member for a trade...

non insured:returning his coin works for me anyhow...I lose the coins I sent, but don't have to keep the coin that I received.image

    the other to PCGS.
Registered insured(under insured) Perhaps enough time hasn't past, but it has taken 3 times longer than my last submission. Stacey(sp) said give the weekend before considering it lost.
