What happens when you use Buy It Now and Ebay is saying that you get a 10% discount?

I had one of those recently. Ebay gave me a coupon code that I entered at checkout that automatically reduced the price by 10%. If I remember correctly, whenever I opened an eligible item the listing would show the price and then also show the discounted price whether it was a BIN or auction. In my case I used it for an auction with the only requirement that the auction had to end by the coupons last day.
