Oddball 50s Set

I am looking for some suggestions of an oddball 50s set to start. I have a 1969 Topps Deckle Edge set, a 1975 TCMA All Time Yankees Set...so naturally im looking for something from the 50s to work on. Cost is slightly an issue, id rather not have to pay over 3-400 bucks for any one card. Thanks!

1959 Fleer Ted Williams - other than one SP, all are well under that price range.
1958 Hires Root Beer - all $400 Beckett high or less
1959 Yankees Yoo Hoo Bottle Caps - not cards, but definitely oddball

Edited to add a couple more

Not sure what condition you are looking for, but how about:

    1958 Hires Root Beer OR

    1954 Red Man

Edited to make it the '54 set and NOT the '52. The '52 has a very expensive Musial card.

I'd go with the 1954 Red Man. I think you can choose to collect them with or without tabs.

Cost will depend on grade you are shooting for.

    Beautiful set imo.

Here are the three I am working on. They are both great looking and a fun challenge.

    1954 Dan-Dee Potato Chips
    1954 Red Heart
    1954 Wilson Franks

If you're a Yankees fan, you could go with some of the photo packs!

1952 Coke Tips is a cool set, but the Mays is super expensive. The rest are very reasonable and kind of cool looking.

    Registry Sets:
    T222's PSA 1 or better

Mays is part of the test set, not the regular one, so you could probably rationalize not having it. It's like the Hires Test set vs regular issue.

I'd vote for '54 Red Heart. Followed by any of the Redman sets, or possibly '55 Topps Doubleheader.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

I agree that it's a nice set. OP stated he did not want to have to spend more than $300.00 - $400.00 on any one card. The MANTLE, even if you got it in a "5", is a $1,300.00 card.

How about 1951 Topps Red &/or Blue Backs. Mainstream, yet somewhat odd, and affordable.

    oddball??

If your used to paying only a couple $$ or less for most of the cards in set (ie 1969T Deckle) and call anything other than common Topps cards oddball, then Id say go for the very common RedMan sets (T232, T233, T234, T235)
you can pick up commons w/o coupons for $1-$3 all the time (buy them in large groups for best deal), and the stars and HOFers are only a few $$ more.

another great set that many dont even know about is the 1949 Exhibit Supply Co. set, it is complete at about 32 different cards (all 1949 cards will say 'AN EXHIBIT CARD' in bottom corner), most of these 1949 cards can be had for $2-$5 often... with the best card being the 1949 Satchel Paige rookie ($50-$75)

    w/ and w/o 'AN EXHIBIT CARD' (1949)

Another cheaper set is the 1954(-1970s) RedHeart Dog Food set, these 1954* cards were issued (by mail in offer) for over 20+ years to anyone who wrote in asking for the cards so are very plentiful in higher grade... dont over spend on these very common cards...

1958 Hires Rootbeer w/o tabs is another good choice
