Population Change in Less than 3 Years for 1931-D Top Pop Mercs

When I bought my 1931-D Joshua II Mercury Dime in MS67FB back in 2010 there was a population of 41 in that grade with none graded higher by our lovely host. With the new + grading I was not disollutioned into thinking I would always have a top pop here. But here's what has happened...

There are now 48 in 67FB with one graded higher in 67+FB. I think what happened is everyone took their 67FB and resubmitted it, many of them cracked out first (my guess). Now the population number has exploded, prices have plummeted and there is one graded higher. image

Anyone else have population explosion stories in a short period of time, excluding hoard finds? Maybe the same story with other coins as a result of + grading?

This is not a rant or complaint, just an observation in the games we play. I plan to keep my example for another 20+ years so I'm not worried about it. image

...this wouldn't be the case IMHO if PCGS offered more than a .50c rebate for sending in cracked-out labels image

That is an excellent observation keyman64. I would not be surprised if that is what happened for this particular coin and many others. Unfortunately, we may never know and the pops may forever be out of line with the actual numbers.

For a good 4-5 years, I had the only 2 examples (graded by our hosts) of the '93/'93 RPD FS-301 Columbian half (not a major variety, but the only variety for the year '93), and I made the MS63, so for a LONG time there was just one, which I got for less than an example w/out the designation. One was MS63, one MS64. Seems in just the last 6-8 months (approx., but no more than that), that 4 more have been made, and, naturally, an MS65 was made, a new pop-top, reducing the $$ on this also. I may be better off getting the variety removed from the cert, who knows.

Also, seems the '92 RPD FS-302 and FS-303 have an example now (I wonder if all the '92's and '93's were sent in by the same submitter).

AND, the same thing with the '09 MEL NA golden dollar. Took about 3 1/2 years for these to show up, pops were very low at first, then, seemingly overnight, the pops almost tripled. For a time, the pops were still lower than ANY Prez MEL $$, but since the pops tripled, now the James Madison is 'King' of the MEL golden dollars. If I think some more, I'm sure I could come up with more (don't even bring up the Type B/C Washies), but I'm not thinking anymore tonight. So, there's a few examples.

As an aside, has anyone else noticed the Registry Set Forum dying a slow death or what, eh?
    I'll come up with something.

    NotSure,

That is how the variety game goes. I specialize in Mercury Dime Varieties. I had a Top Pop MS64FB 1942-D/D by 6 points I think for about 2 years...now there are two higher. That's a very different game ForSure. image
