O.K. I need some advice/info 1958 Topps football

Hello Folks,
Long story short. I have 1958 football that are NM-MT in every way.......; but the back trivia answer on some are rubbed off. From what I've subbed on 3 different subs; they will get 6's and 7's. I'm talking gorgeous looking cards. My question is this: Does this seem consistant with PSA standards for this issue? The reason I'm asking....A few have sold quickly to PSA dealers. Why are they interested if the standards have been applied properly in regards to the back trivia question.? I hope I have not been crapped on by the graders.

Thanks in advance to the replies.

My experience is, it just depends.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !

those cards might be worth a little more to raw card set builders who may not be as inclined to worry about the backs.

hopefully, if they get cracked and resold, they'd be properly described.

otherwise, i've yet to see a vintage sports card with a rubbed out trivia or cartoon back assigned a PSA 8 or better.

I was always under the impression that the rubbed off trivia game was irrevelant to the cards' grade (I could be wrong though)

For the 81 Topps Hockey it appeared irrelevant. I dont know know much else though.

    I don't think a rub-off should grade anywhere
    close to the "mint" categories.

Mint means, or should mean, "as it came from
the factory". I can't see anything better than
a 5 or 6 for a rubbed off cartoon, no matter
how "mint" the rest of the card is.

    IMHO

Why would PSA dealers want them? Tell me they're not going to end up in 8 holders.

They might wind up in '8' holders....
  • I would be curious to see these examples.....scans?

Perhaps the buyers are not aware that the rub-offs have been scratched and assume the cards have significant bump potential. Typically, rubbed backs on such cards ('58T FB, '64T BB, etc) grade PSA 6 at best. If not overtly obvious, they are sometimes overlooked.

Thanks. I'm feeling a little better now. Can I assume a grader that sees the back rubbed will not give an 8 99.9% of the time?

Has anyone submitted cards with the backs not rubbed, but the writing was still visible? I've never gotten better than a 6 even though the card back was not rubbed.

Probably because you didn't include back scans or make any mention of the backs being rubbed off.
