I almost fell over when I saw my submission grade....

I bought this coin months and months ago. I was lucky enough to find my second example of this very rare variety of 1934 Junk dollar, with 6 sail lines between the two sails. Of course, I bought from an unknowing seller on ebay.
At only 58 coins of this variety certified by PCGS, and over 24,000 common varieties cert'ed - these are very hard to get ahold of.
From the sellers picture, I thought it would be XF details: cleaned. When I recieved it in the mail, I was wow'ed - a nice original Au dollar. My grade on the coin was AU58, but thought PCGS would give me a 55.
The package was opened at PCGS on 2/16/13....and I just recieved grades back on friday 5/3/13.
MS61.
I was certain the break in the luster on the obverse would send it AU...but I got a pleasant surprise!
Finest certified is a 63.

The fields is likely what saved a 61 grade. There aappears to be some flat spots on the high points of the portrait.
Still an attractive coin- congrats

Sometimes it's worth taking a shot, if your willing to gamble based upon your numismatic experience and gut feeling.
I agree with CoinKat that the frosty undisturbed mint luster in the coin's fields probably tilted the grade from AU-58 to MS-61. -- Especially for this coin design, which has large areas of wide open fields on both obverse and reverse.

The closer you look at the boat the more detail you see. A beautiful strike!
