Q About Grading Numbered Cards...

I asked a grading question a month or so ago, but the part about getting short prints graded was overlooked. So I pulled an Emmitt Smith 2012 Panini Certified Gold Mirror Immortals Card 17/25....The card is in great shape. my questions is...Do people grade cards because there might only be 25 out there, or is it still smart to grade only on condition. I hope this makes since, thanks!

I'd grade that for condition not the rarity, which looks fine from the scans

  • thank you for your quick response rtimmer! When do you know to grade for rarity? I feel that if it is a decent player on a decent condition card, then it would be smart to send it in. Am I way off?

If you have a player where there are more active registry collectors than there are cards, then you should always get it graded because there will always be demand, regardless of condition, to fill a hole in someone's registry collection. Not sure about Sanders specifically, but that is the logic that I follow. If there are only 3 or 4 active buyers for a player, then there is no point in getting a #'d to 25 card graded if you think its below 10 condition.

    It's a post-career card. It won't fit in the player's registry sets. I wouldn't get it graded.

I collect a lot of similar low numbered Texas Longhorn inserts. My rule of thumb is to slab it if I think it will be a 9 OB. If it comes back below a 9, I crack it and keep it raw.
