as a separate issue. does this match the 1840 O large O?

After looking it does appear that the xf40 has the wrong mm position to be the large o.
Edited to add for the piece above the mm does not appear thick enough to qualify

No. The large O is on the "with drapery" variety--Your coin is a NO drapery example. The Xf40 example shown in coinfacts is incorrect. It is also a NO drapery coin. As far as the mintmark position for the no drapery coins, I think that they both have the same value. The 1840-O WITH DRAPERY large O is a very rare coin.

the 1840 no drapery obverse is entirely different from the with drapery type, the rim on the with drapery obverse is as wide as the stars, the no drapery rim is about half as wide as the stars, the differences are more obvious once your eyes have seen a few. the die used for the with drapery large O was also used for no drapery coins, the denticles were crudely recut, presumably by hand just before the with drapery large O quarters were struck. the XF coin is the no drapery "mintmark left" variety.

Cocoinut

An XF40 coin was listed yesterday on eBay for $7,500, and was removed today. The new blue-fading-to-white holder described it as with drapery, and as an FS-501 variety, which it is NOT. The owner had received 4 offers before it was pulled. Hopefully, it will be returned for reholdering.
