What would you have done if you were the president of PSA ?

So here's a real life situation that happened recently.

Joe Orlando was sent an email about a high dollar bogus card residing in a PSA holder.

It was a rare card. The 1st one ever graded of it's kind.

A person took time to send Joe pics of the card after the card showed up on the PSA pop reports, pointing
out how it was a fake.

Shortly after this info was sent to Joe, the card disappeared from the PSA pop reports.

Do you think PSA should have fed the guy a bone who sent the info ? The card could have easily sold for anywhere from 5-10k if
the fraud hadn't been detected. Keep in mind, the guy freely gave the info to PSA, asking for nothing in return, and isn't looking for anything, but
do you feel it would have been good business to throw the guy a bone ? Edited to add that the guy is a very happy PSA customer, returning year after year
for the PSA and PSA/DNA services.

I am assuming you are talking about that hockey card.

Giving this person some vouchers or a free membership renewal would be a good option.

If you are talking about a cash payment then no I would not do that if I were the president of the company.

  • I think you did it because you are a true collector and passionate about the hobby and not for a few vouchers.

I do say congrats and remember the quaker oats pics you posted. Thanks on behalf of the hobby for helping do the right thing. I'm glad the card was removed from the pop reports.

Find the old post and note case is closed so we can all give you a thanks.

It sure sounds like the guy is looking for something in return.

I did not put two and two together. It was you who raised the issue.

By starting a thread about this topic it appears you feel you were mistreated.

So PSA did nothing for you and you think they should have?

No, it was me who posted the info about the situation. I'm not the guy who broke the case.

The guy did it for the good of the hobby and for those who enjoy
    collecting PSA related products.

Not at all. The original question is what would you have done. The company in charge has already spoken.
I heard about this and thought to myself that I would have done differently then the company in charge, therefore the question.

...which is reward in and of itself.

I would post an article in the next SMR with his pic in the magazine and a discriptive article on the whole situation.

You haven't told us what the company did or what you would have done differently.

As for what I would have done, in the situation that you described, I would have replied to the email with "Thank you for bringing this to my attention" and that would be it.

I agree with Maurice. An email response would be sufficient here. Furthermore, if PSA adopted a policy of rewarding (cash or vouchers) people who turned in supposed fake cards, I'm not sure that incentive brings about the behavior that PSA seeks. They would probably start getting every wacko and their brother claiming that certain cards were fake, with little to no evidence to back up the claim. I think that the current system (no financial rewards) works best because only true collectors and stewards of the hobby are incentivized to bring the legitimate cases to PSA's attention (such as the Parkhurst card), and the nutjobs have no incentive to waste Joe's time with false claims.

"Throwing him a bone" would open up pandora's box.

Virtue may be it's own reward but I'd throw a bone. Perhaps asking for confidentiality but I'd throw a bone.

If I were president I would have prob threw him a voucher or waived a years sign up fee. More importantly i would also have psa start grading Star basketball cards and rack packs

I think the desired answer is something like this... I would have sent him $2,500 in unmarked bills that way he would have gotten a reward and not had to receive a 1099

    Orginal Thread

Here is the original thread. The OP deleted his original comments and claims to be the one who contacted Joe. If you read further in the thread he makes reference to Joe O responding to his email.

Clearly some great detective work was done and for hockey collectors a white knight stepped up and cleaned up a mistake on PSA's part.

That being said this thread is really strange because now you are denying that you were the one who contacted Joe O.

I think you started this looking for sympathy and expecting board members to side with you looking for a cash reward and you did not get the response you expected.

Here is your statement for those who do not care to check out the original thread.

Joe Orlando responded to my email at 9:25am eastern Saturday morning after I sent it 7am Sat. morning.
He said he will look into it.

You have yet to disclose what outcome you were looking for so let us know what kind of reward you were expecting.

I should get something for pointing out "quaker oats" to Joe Orlando?
I think I have the email here somewhere.. I would be happy for them
to develop a 3.5 x 5 actual sized holder and they can keep their vouchers..
I would also like them to fix the size of the current holder so that every card graded
    doesn't look small.

  • Exodus, why lie? Everyone knows that once its on the Internet, it never goes away. Don't drag this out and just admit it was you. Good detective work And memory Dpeck. I also remember reading that thread now. Especially being less than a month ago.

That being said, I think you should of been thrown some free grading vouchers.

How about having a plastic holder to fit all sizes of cards we collect....surely a no brainer!..what business would not take advantage of potential business...not having the correct size holder floors me!

I think it's nice that PSA acted quickly and took the card off the pop report. I contacted BGS more than once about a card with the wrong population number (i even gave them the serial numbers of more that i found so they could see for themselves) and they have never fixed the pop report on the card.
I like the idea of putting the persons name and picture in the upcoming SMR with an article.

If I were President of PSA, and had actualy seen the email ( rather than my staff filtering and acting on it ), I would have thrown you the following "feel good" bone:

A simple reply thanking the sender for their info and a "if I can be of assistance to you in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me," statement.
