3 raw NEWPs from Aureo...

... are waiting for me at home image As with anything bought from auction images, I'm a bit nervous, but I have a good feeling about the 1814-JJ from Mexico that looked dirty in the images, but catalogued EBC. Hoping that dirt is toning and the luster is there to warrant the designation. Now for the work day to end and then a 90 minute commute home. Pictures later tonight.

P.S. I kind of like this gamble aspect. image

Here's to hoping they exceed your expectations! Isn't that the auction house you landed your 14/3-MO HJ from?

I agree, the gamble is part of the fun. Those times where you are totally blown are away because the coin is so much nicer than the pictures are exhilarating.

Since I frequently purchase "circulated" medals, I never am sure what I will get. Those times when the medal is more glorious than its photo; priceless!

Good luck 2k, and move work closer to home, that's too much commute. Of course being in the oil business I should encourage everyone to make as long a commute as possible, preferably in a giant size SUV.

Nice to know that even the oil barons aim to conserve gas by shortening their commutes. image

2k, good luck on your newps! I have one coming myself with similar mystery "is it dirt or toning?" image

Dan, that's the same Auction house. However, if you have bought from Aureo before based on images, you know that most of their bright white coins come with wipe marks and hairlines that are not apparent in the images. In fact, I just looked at the 3 coins I received and 2 are showing just that - long parallel micro-hairlines that point to a wiping / cleaning. Not too bad, though, but I think I will send 1819 and 1821 to NGC before flipping them.

Jeff, I'm planning to move back to the city in the next year. I'm starting to get tired of the commute, to be honest.

Anywho, coins are in-hand and 1814 didn't disappoint. Love the old crusty toning like this and the obverse has my favorite color present - purple. I just love seeing that color on old silver! Luster is there, but muted by toning. I think PCGS would grade it 53-55.

Nice pickup TK, will fit nicely in your set. I agree with your grade assessment, leaning towards 53.

I'm leaning towards a lower AU, as well. Largely because the luster is muted by the toning.

Here's another look at the coin with a different lighting to show the surfaces.
