What's it worth? 1921-S Buffalo Nickel, 2 Feather

I normally don't see this coin in this grade without the variety... and this is the first 2 feather I've had (I don't actively seek them out).
So just curious, what's it worth?
Thanks!

the problem here is the date. coins with big date premiums have a far lower percentage of having variety premium. if it graded pcgs f12, my outdated sheets show $135 and the auction results on coinfacts show nothing worthy of mention in this condition for the 2 feather variety. can't say much about higher graded examples except it is possible the date value would overshadow the variety premium.

i'm not a buyer but i do like it when the feather is completely gone like on this example.

That date (along with 1916 and 1921) is one of the most common two-feather varieties. Because the coin already carries a hefty premium as a semi-key date, in my experience there is little to no premium for the variety in lower grades (up to Fine, and your coin looks to be in the VG-Fine range).

That said, there are some real experts here including the guy who literally wrote the book on these varieties, so hopefully one of them will see the thread and give their opinion as well.

  • The other posters are spot on. The 21S is one of the more common 2 feather varieties, and because the 21S already carries a premium, the variety unfortunately doesn't exponentially add to the value like some other dates/mm's. There are always exceptions however for MS, top pop, or market demand fluctuations. It only takes 2 determined eBay bidders to make for some pretty impressive prices fetched for some of these varieties. But the opposite also seems to be true- sometimes they go for a song.

One of the more common 2F dates (full die run + a limited number of dies) but sometimes brings a decent premium.
