thanks for the assistance. i overlooked that you have an image of this variety on the wiki

could have done w/o the link/spam to your item(s) for sale. a pm would have sufficed.

I thought Rick's reply was completely appropriate.
If you post on a public forum, you should expect a public answer, not a PM.
That way, others who are interested in the question and answer will benefit.

A link is not spam, since you asked the original question.
The PDF is one way to get a complete answer.

Uncalled for. His response was 100% appropriate. If you wanted a PM, you should have asked for one. You asked for assistance in gaining knowledge about something you posted. That was provided and then additional resources were provided about the same series in case you want to learn more. Most people would be appreciative of the assistance provided and just say thank you.

If this $5 PDF were in your computer last October while perusing eBay, you may have been able to cherrypick that $10,000 1888/7 S1 I won for $47.

a rather ignorant statement. to play the "if" game with me, you would need to have an inkling about the professions i've chosen not to pursue that would have made a pick like that seem like a pittance but i've chosen a different path than to pretend making a little bit of money is a reflection on my success in this life. nice to see how you use that opportunity so uselessly though. maybe making that and/or some of your other guides available for a short time for lets say, gratis, would show your appreciation to have such good fortune instead of a pithy tagline.

for someone that has been on this planet for as long as you have, to need something like that makes me quite sad for you and it will take far more than that to make me regret making my post(s). i'll truly hope that you cannot possibly be this fragile and hope to see something philanthropic from you in the future.

The gratis copy is on the Wiki site that you posted. What more do you need?

I offer individual dated sections of the Attribution Guide for a few bucks because some people want to attribute a single variety and don't feel the need to buy the whole 700 page book.

You've posted here a long time and I don't recall any negative posts before. I hope your OK.

You do realize that Eagle Eye is Rick Snow right? The guy who wrote the book? The guy who immediately answered your question? He gave you the answer for free. You were asking for someone to give you his information, that someone had to pay for, for free. And he was nice enough to give it to you, and then you complain? Wow! I think you are wrong on this one.

Lance, have to agree Rick answered you politely and accurately. He's not deserving of being blasted after a kind, prompt response.

I agree - Lance has been friendly, and was thankful in the first half of his original reply.

I may have misinterpreted his use of the word "spam", as more negative than he intended.
I suppose it may have seemed unexpected to click on a link and find something with a price instead of something free.

It can be very hard to judge intent on the internet sometimes.
And negative responses tend to escalate beyond what was originally intended,
which is why our host urges us to avoid negativity.
My apologies if my post exaggerated what Lance had really meant.

All I can say to that is wow...a sense of entitlement along with a dollop of hypocrisy from someone spamming his ebay and BST listings in his own tagline.

Let's take up a collection for Lance because he obviously can't afford the exorbitant $5 charge. C'mon guys, dig deep.

words on a screen lose essential context with no body/eye movement, tone of voice or hand gestures and whatnot. they are often dry and quite open to interpretation, depending on the reader.

it is no secret i am not a fan of members posting links to their wares (except their sig line which is not a policy violation btw), whatever they may be and i am harder on veteran members or members whom seem to only post to something they have a vested interest in and don't contribute virtually anything. this case being the former and not the latter since he does contribute.

also it is even less acceptable to me when i am a part of that self-promotion and to give the impression it is acceptable by not saying something i simply will not accept. there is a reason there is a bst and the cost of the guide is obviously negligible, especially considering i ordered 3 books, including one for indian cents/flying eagle varieties the same day of my original post, or within hours of it to go along with the many hundreds i've already spent and the many more hundreds i intend to spend. i specifically opted not to buy the guide because it was spammed and even more so since it was not removed. i bought one of these guides previously and am not a fan of them at all.

but, it is one event, in one day and now it is over. many more good opportunities left ahead.

the assistance is appreciated, especially by someone whom i will nearly take their word for granted and not verify but he knew better than to post the link, plain and simple.

    telephoto, just sad.

Careful; don't fall off that high horse. You might break something...
It's gratifying to know that you are there to decide for us all what's "acceptable" and who should "know better" and who shouldn't. I'll sleep much easier tonight .

I'm a bit confused here and obviously very board to even be posting in this thread as I don't share a vested interest in the series... but in the OP's thread title 'assistance identifying a snow variety 1888 rpd', doesn't the 'snow variety' imply that the variety was discovered by Rick Snow? The same Rick Snow who answered the OP's question that was asked on a public coin forum? If the answers to the above questions are yes, then what the heck is going on? Someone asked a question and got an answer right from the horse's mouth and then whips the horse after it spews the correct answer? Seems a bit silly to me, even at the bottom of the CU totem pole.

hope I didn't upset anyone with my inquires,

<< <i>doesn't the 'snow variety' imply that the variety was discovered by Rick Snow? >>

Really, it means it's numbered as in Rick Snow's books, not necessarily discovered by Rick.

And Lance did thank Rick for the help.
Lance is just bothered by links to things that are for sale (even if low cost) - it's apparently against the forum rules, unless in the sig line.
I don't think Rick was aware of this.
Then things can get blown out of proportion when people (like myself) make a negative comment because we didn't really understand his perspective.

I agree! I got a jump start on Cinco de Mayo by making margies after all my yard work, etc. this afternoon.
I respect both Lance and Rick, and hope both move on from this and continue to contribute to the forum the way they generally do.
