1988 Donruss rack case rip

I bought a 72 pack rack case from BBCE during their Thanksgiving 2011 sale (I think it was $20 with free shipping). Decided to kill some time and brain cells by tearing through it over the past few days. This set is so worthless that the current issue of SMR doesn't even mention it in the price guide section (not even "see online pricing").

There were 10 packs with hall of famers on top, which I kept unopened. 2 packs have the Tom Glavine rookie showing and one has Nolan Ryan.
I opened the other 72 packs and stripped out the HOFers. At least this frees up a little space for me. Only scored 2 Robbie Alomar rookies and 2 more Ryans but it did yield another 7 Glavine rookies (9 total in the case plus any that are hiding in the 10 packs I'm not opening).

Longest HOF dry spell: 3 packs with no HOFers. Best HOF pack yielded 6 HOFers.

Around 5 or 6 years ago, I paid $20 each for a pair of 1988 Donruss rack cases. Pops were really low at the time (I mean, who in their right mind submits 1988 Donruss??!??) so I submitted a bunch. It ended up being my most profitable rip/submit/flip venture.

The post below comes from a jag off moron who adds nothing to these boards.

I've always wondered how common printing errors become considered desirable variations. In this case, I guess it's because nwsportscards says so

One thing this exercise brought was a painful reminder of how bad the Yankees teams of the late '80's were. Yuck.

What?! Oh you must mean they weren't good until they brought up Hensley Muelens and Kevin Maas.

I got two boxes of this from the PIF thread. I got six catchers in on pack. Six catchers. Crazy.
  • Not surprisingly there is a very low submission count to 1988 (88,000 for all sets combined in that year) comparatively to 1987 and 1989 (some 400,000 each year). But the key cards (Glavine and Alomar) look like they about a 25-30% PSA 10 rate.

I have found the Glavine a difficult PSA 10 for some reason.

Sounds like you had some fun Daniel. Did you happen to notice if Donruss utilized any sequencing when loading their rack packs? Were both Glavines in the same section of the rack pack and were the other Glavines you pulled from the same section as well? More curious than anything else.

    Thanks for sharing.

Mike - On the 2 intact rack packs w/Glavine on top, they are both in the cell furthest from the header. I have no idea which sections the Glavine's I pulled from the packs I ripped are from.

Great info Daniel. I know Topps had a thing for sequencing their rack packs with players only showing up in certain sections, but I haven't done any analysis of Fleer or Donruss. Donruss began producing racks with players showing on top only in 1983, the puzzle pieces are on the back of each section. Fleer followed suit the following year only with the stickers on back unless you count the jumbo racks from 1983 which were really 3 cello packs inside the rack wrapper. Something to look into when I have the time.

    Thanks again!!!

I have had a box of these in storage for many years now. Ripped about 10 and that was enough. image
